Work WAS pumping friendly...

Well we now have mandatory unpaid breaks. We're allowed up to 2 15min unpaid & required to take a 30min unpaid lunch. I asked to split the lunch & eat while pumping, but was told no. I usually skip lunch or work while eating & then took 2 pumping breaks.
My boss even has a baby the same age as mine (5mo). I'm just irritated. :

THe problem is that I now have to lose an hour of pay every day to feed my baby.

Wow, sorry... I really don't know what to say.

Things like this make me feel so lucky to have my job. I pump whenever I want, and have a private office with a door.

Be sure to send your story on to Rep Carolyn Maloney's office. Maybe with a Dem Congress and White House we will get some movement on the BPA in the next 8 years.

Is there legislation that will cover you in your area? I'm sorry you're going through this. But something just tells me it's not right and you can fight it.

Have you researched what the local laws are?

can they legally do that?

I don't understand

I think this is quite normal, actually. IF you are having extra breaks beyond what other employees who don't pump get, then it doesn't surprise me that they are unpaid. It's true you had an exceptional situation before but this is the way it is for a lot of pumping moms (most?). I worked longer days to make up for my pump break time.

Also, the states that do have pumping laws do not require your employee to pay you during that time.

I think that the issue is that she is given 60 minutes of break time per day (15 + 15 + 30) which she was previously allowed to break up in whatever way she wanted (ie 20/20/20 or 30/30 etc), but she is now forced to take it in those specific increments and perhaps at specific times. Those increments are not sufficient for her pumping schedule, so she now has to take additional break time to cover it.

I agree that it's probably something that a lot of people have to deal with, but it still sucks. In my job, I am lucky enough that my boss doesn't care when/how I use my break time as long as my work is done at the end of the day.

Well, the other employees were allowed paid breaks to do as they wish... smoke, get a snack, play on the internet... I had to use my paid break time for pumping so I didn't take extra breaks. Plus the breaks have to be 15/30/15 now when before I could break them up as I wished before & it never took an hour out of my day before to pump.

I hope that clarifies.

CEVmommy: That's how it was for me. I pumped when needed & got my work done. All was well. I didn't even use an hour, but now I have to use an hour AND it is unpaid. I think he's trying to cut overhead, but he could just do it by clocking out for breaks period. They don't really need to be at certain times or for a definite length.
