This is not news, but I am getting worried enough about it to venture into a forum I've never been in before.
This is from an EWG study which can be found here: http://www.ewg.org/reports/bisphenola
So here's my thought. The EWG is encouraging people to ask their legislators to get the FDA to place more stringent limits on the amount of BPA that's in canned foods. Good enough, but who knows how long that will take. Meanwhile, I thought a faster route might be for us to contact our local grocery stores, health food stores, and perhaps also the major canned goods manufacturers, and ask them to provide 'canned' goods in glass jars. Some foods are already available in glass jars, but as near as I can tell, 'canned' tomatoes, diced tomatoes, etc. aren't available in glass jars. Obviously the equipment is available to do this; I'm guessing the same factory that processes spaghetti sauce could also process diced tomatoes in the exact same jars.
As consumers are becoming increasingly aware of the dangers of lead and/or BPA in canned goods, it would seem there'd be a growing market for 'canned' tomatoes in glass jars. Perhaps other products as well, but tomatoes are what come to mind first for me.
So would you please join me in asking grocery stores (and manufacturers, if you have the time) to carry 'canned' goods in food-safe glass jars? Thanks, mamas!
