Oh, I hate having birthdays close together! Ds's is a few days after Dh's and I usually still haven't washed the cake pan by the time I need it to bake the second cake :.

The good thing about ages 3 and 4 is usually they are easily pleased. We have dollar stores around here which have toys in the 5 dollar range. I just avoid the things that look like they will break easily. The kids don't know how much things cost or think things that cost more are better.

My ds would have enjoyed a few mylar balloons (the mylar ones hold the helium longer). You could make a batch of playdough in some pretty colors. There are recipes online. Add some cookie cutters and a small rolling pin to make a playset. I once found magnetic dressup dolls at a discount store. My ds would have liked vehicles that had working parts like a cement mixer that spun.

Do you have Freecycle there? Or thrift (used) shops?

Really at this age they do not know or care if it is used. I got some of my daughter's presents for her 5th used at a consignment sale (doll clothes and a doll). She doesn't care. Just clean it up and wrap it. Magic Erasers work great on many plastic things.

DD was in love with the pink glittery playdough I made for chirstmas last year.

Maybe put together a "kit" using things you have around the house. Gather together all the ingredients to bake something together or to make a simple craft.

Do you go to church? If I were in your situation, I'd call my church and ask for help.

I'm not sure how crafty you are.. but you could get some things from the thrift store for dress up/pretend play. Or sew a cape, or make some crowns or other things like that. I was thinking about making my DD a cape, crown and a sword for her birthday. We'll see if I have enough time.... wishful thinking

freecyclke came through for me. iwasnt holding out much hope but last night i watch a movie on lap top adn felt the need to get up adn chekc my e-mail. i did and as i turned on the monitor up pinged an OFFERD: Pink Bike 4-6 i was like Wow cool that would be fab for DD. i asked, its mine and he is even bringing it around while DD is at school. i will have to get some stabilisers for her.

i might even do the dressy up stuff as she loves anything dressy or flouncy that twirls when she moves.

thanks for all the suggestions.
