Emergency: Overtime Pay Betrayal!

This was emailed to me.. please take a look, it is very important!

I'm writing a note to let you know about President Bush's attack
on overtime pay rules and protections. A lot of people will lose
overtime pay when this goes through in the next couple of
months. We need to join together and speak out in order to stop
this. Please send a message to your senators and representative.

we've had a few threads on this over the last month or two you might want to do a search for them. I think there was a link in one to email your reps.

The danger too is not just that people who currently recieve overtime pay will loose ir, but that people who currently don't work overtime becuase thier companies are cheap will now be expected to work more hours. We already work too much.

PBS had a wonderful program on this.

It was about when the IL rep tried to get rights for companies to offer paid time off instead of overtime, and the companies would be able to defer paying OT until the end of the year if the employee couldn't take the time off. This amounts to the company borrowing from its employees, billions of dollars in interest-free loans across the US.

Her legislation failed, but then Shrub's Labor Dept figured out a way to screw us and hand corp a big check by having more people exempted from OT pay. The Republican Congress, in the pockets of corporations, happily set about to approve this and then try and tell us that it was for our own good. Then they gave themselves a pay raise.

This Administration is doing everything they can to drive down wages and turn us into robots with McJobs. They are doing everything they can to make college so expensive it is out of reach of most people. They have given countries like India repeated assurances that Bush will oppose any state that tries to punish companies that outsource decent-paying American jobs.

The fact that last week's Productivity statistics are so high is not a good thing: it means that Americans are having to work extra hard for the same amount of money, frequently picking up the duties of someone whose been laid off without extra comp.

I don't understand why people can't see that.

Loss of OT affects alot of nurses, who are sometimes forced to stay and work OT or be charged with desserting their patients and having to defend their licenses. This reduction in pay will make it that much easier for nurses to leave the field, IF they can find other jobs.
