Had our baby boy last night, October 16th, 2008 at 9:25 pm after 2 1/2 hours of active labor. (39w 1d). Weight: 7lb 4oz
I'm still processing it all, it was not the experience I'd imagined and I feel sad and PO'd at myself because I feel I lost my 'composure' during the final stages...Hoping to go over the whole birth with our midwife when she visits tomorrow...I did get my homebirth though and I do have a healthy baby boy and I am very grateful for that
Short-medium version of birth story: NAK
Ctx 10 min. apart for about 6 hours, down to 5 min. apart for an hour, called midwife, around 7pm hit active labor 2-3 min. apart, water broke 8:30pm, babe's head and body completely out with ONE long, excruciating push at 9:25pm
Babe was born 'flat'/limp and not breathing at all for 4 full minutes
:
Dh called 911, in the meantime, midwives had to resuscitate using CPR/oxygen etc. By the time paramedics arrive, babe was breathing on his own but still sounded congested..EMS assessed/monitored for a bit and babe looked good. Midwife decided we should go to the hospital to be on the safe side for a condition called pneumothorax We went with sirens on just cuz of the cold air but it was very laid back, chatting and calling up friends to let them know about the birth.
3 hours later in ER triage we were on the clear but Ped. recommended we stay 24 hours for observation. I didn't want to but hubby did, worried if he stopped breathing at home we could lose precious time. I agreed and we got a really nice private room for free (normally $250 a night) cuz it's all they had available
: I'm glad we did stay. We chilled, midwife came in the a.m and discharged us just 12 hours after we were admitted.
Babe was shocked and sleepy and didn't/couldn't latch and nurse until 4 hours after the birth, but then he was a pro!
Just a very tiny 'superficial' tear, surprisingly!, didn't have it stitched, feeling good but exhausted.
No name yet and everyone has an opinion of course
Hopefully the perfect name will pop up soon..
Anyway off to bed now...Hope everyone left is enjoying their babes soon!!!
