This book feels good in your hands. The paper is heavyweight, and the illustrations flow perfectly.

I think you could steal some ideas from some car play mats. Search for them on etsy, flicker, crafster, etc. They are cloth, but I'm sure you could get design ideas for doing one with paint. Some gray roads, green parks, a parking lot, a big highway and a little dirt road... Of course, you may need some 3D buildings and street signs to go with it! How fun!

Our cars still end up on the floor. Instead of a table (with legs) I'd suggest a small lip around the edge (that they can crash into), and cut the plywood to the size of your couch so you can slide it under when you're not using it or want to reclaim your living room. Make it as long as possible so they can get their speed up in car races. If you want to paint it maybe just choose one color. As your ds grows he'll probably play with it more if there isn't just one set road that he feels he has to follow. You can always just do a tree here and a mountain there and he'll drive around the tree or fly and do stunts as he imagines them. If he has a friend or sibling they'll argue over which direction to go on the road, whose turn it is to drive ...

if you think he'd want roads... maybe cut out some strips of black felt, and he can place the roads as he sees fit
