I know. It's enough to ruin your day.

Personally, I think it's a combination of everything modernity is doing to alter what our bodies and nature have been doing forever.

Is paracetamol tylenol in the US?

I agree with you guys. Everything we're doing to fight and/or supplant nature is layering on top of each other to produce a big ol' messy mess.

Folic Acid is the chemical manufactured form of Folate. Rather find and eat the food sources of folate instead taking chemical manufactured supplements.

Right. This is ideal, but I think most women take a prenatal vit to "cover their bases," so to speak.

I also read the other day that kids were more likely to have allergies the more Vitamin C their mothers took while pregnant. I don't have time to look for it now but I saw it in several different articles and studies. I think they were talking about eczema in particular.

On and on it goes.

What?! Seriously. My head is about to explode here. We really are f-ing things up good here in our modern, 'advanced' society, aren't we?

There are more if you google 'eczema pregnancy vitamin c'. It's hard to know what to do sometimes.

I didn't take prenatals more than a handful of times with DS, and this totally confirms my suspicion that the potential for harm is there.

Just eat a balanced diet, yo!

Raw milk has folic acid in it

But cow's milk has many other issues to worry about, one example being improper phosphorous balance for humans, which interferes with calcium absorption.

Well, that depends. The problem is that most people are deficient in vitamins and minerals and pregnancy only exacerbates that issue. No matter how balanced your diet is, our soil and food supply today is extremely depleted and it is nearly impossible to obtain the necessary nutrients from food alone, no matter how well you are eating. This can and does set the stage for many other problems that would make asthma and eczema look like a picnic. I would definitely advocate for using whole food supplements instead of synthetic vitamins though.

They don't say what levels of vitamins are consumed and what form they were in, which would matter quite a bit IMO. I'm not going to stop taking my prenatals because of this, but I do take food-source vitamins and if I feel the need for extra vit c, I only use it in the form of a natural food source (cherry acerola powder).

Yeah, dairy only confuses the issue. It is loaded with environmental contaminants which poses another problem altogether. I'm not saying its all bad, just that it confuses things. There are pros and cons.

honestly I don't pay much attention to studies that show nutrients to be damaging. There's no agenda there, right?

I would have to say that this would be a result of people taking terrible forms of the vitamins in ridiculously high doses.

By the way, did any of these studies implicate the enriched or fortified foods the government is advocating? Because that couldnt' POSSIBLY be an issue... :

I wondered about that, too. The majority of folic acid most people eat is from cereal, bread, rice, etc. that have been enriched. We don't even eat those things (because they all contain our allergens; we make our own of everything), so the only folic acid I consumed, for example, was from whole foods or my vits. Also, I took vits with all 4 kids, and only my 2nd two are allergic.

Clearly, there is a big picture view to all of this that the researchers are missing. Of course, they seem only to study things in isolation . . .

I think it could be because these vitamins are in synthetic form rather than whole foods (folate vs folic acid, ascorbic acid vs whole c from acerola cherries and the like). Just my thought...

Yep, I think there's even a few studies about how the fake (synthetic) vitamins actually keep you from absorbing the real thing or something like that, sorry I dont have a better written answer right now.

Ugh, I didn't need to read that. I took high doses of folic acid when pregnant with dd. It was advised by my midwives since I'd had an abnormal pap and then a colposcopy that came back saying I had mild to moderate displaysia. There are studies saying large amounts of folic acid can "reverse" cell change on the cervix. I took a mega dose of folic acid every day from the time I was about 25 weeks prego or so FTR, I stopped when I got my normal pap results after giving birth to her so it may have actually worked.

I know what you're all going to say. It's just a study. It's probably flawed. It's nothing I did. But I'm sure you all know how hard it is not to try and blame yourself as well. I feel like all the other stories I read of kids who have all these food allergies also have brothers and sisters with tons of food allergies, and parents with food allergies/environmental allergies, etc. Or you do a TED for your baby while bfing and find out you are intolerant to many things and never knew. But dd is just an anomaly in this family. No one else has food allergies. No one else has any allergies or issues. I did the TED and this food, all food, is fine for me, it doesn't bother me at all. It's hard to look at all that and not feel like I did something to her somehow when she was inside me.

yes but like someone said above--these can alos help other more severe problems--your baby was safe and that's what matters!!!---maybe it wouldn't have helped your situation while pregnant if you didn't take those pills--what then? I'm just saying it's not use looking back-

it's still hard to read this--because what do you beleive and do? I'm told I need folic acid while prego--okay?!!!
