Anesthesia for ER??

Hi Ladies,
I have read that many of you were put to sleep by an anesthesiologist for you ER which made it a lot easier. My clinic only does that for a fee of $500. They just use two drugs to help relax you for the procedure. What are your thoughts about this? Is it worth the money to be put to sleep? I would love to hear your stories either way (both being awake and asleep for this).

Thanks in advance.

I was put to under anesth. for both my er's and I don't think I would want it any other way because it is a difficult thing to go through. If you have the money I would do it. My RE was excellent and I'm sure he has a justification for why he does it that way. Best of luck to you!

Sorry for the dumb question, but what does ER stand for... I always thought it was emergency room, but I'm thinking after reading your post there must be another meaning, so please enlighten me!! Thanks!!

ER = egg retrieval

I haven't gone through ivf but i would want to be put under if nothing for the fact that I'd want my body to be as relaxed as possible during the retrieval. GL!

Thanks!! That makes sense to me now!!! I think I'd want to be at least somewhat out of it too for something like that!!! Good luck!

I have never done IVF. but if there is a procedure that they "offer" anesthesia for... it is usually cause it hurts like the dickens to do it without anesthetic. If you have the $$ I would definitely go for the drugs! Why hurt if you don't have to??

I'm w/Yarnista. I was asleep for both of my ERs. I was very relieved to do it that way. I did not want to be conscious for ER--it is a big deal!

Ughhh, I've done it both ways. My first clinic had anesthesiologist but they didn't give anything more than a tiny bit of versed (tiny bit) and some morphine. It hurt sooo bad, I remember them telling me to "relax and uncurl your toes". Why they didn't just give me more meds I have no idea. The second clinic I went to used general anesthesia...thank goodness.

There is no way I would EVER have ER again without anesthesia, it's barbaric. It is worth every single penny.

Wow! Thanks so much ladies! I don't understand why they wouldn't just make it standard procedure to use anesthetic??
I now think its worth every penny!

Goodnight!

CCRM uses anesthesia for their ERs (it's a mild form of general because you're not out for very long). Right before my ER, I mentioned to my nurse that my local clinic does not use anesthesia. She said she doesn't understand why some clinics do that - there's not only the pain factor, but also the safety factor. Apparently if you accidentally move during the ER you could risk perforation of some of the nearby organs/structures and the risks that go along with that including infection. Because of that they always use anesthesia for ER.
