I'd like to use something a little healthier than the HFS version of Gatorade this time around. Any suggestions?

My plan was to use honey and water. Maybe a lil ACV in there too. But, I'm not sure that I'll be able to tolerate the smell since I apparently get nausea in labor.

Water with some sea salt and whatever else appeals to you - honey, lemon juice, etc.

I wasn't TF yet when trying for a home birth with DD ( I used EmergenC then)....

BUT if I am blessed enough to try again I will drink lots of coconut water!

Would warm stock be a good idea?

...and isn't kombucha full of electrolytes? ...you could buy yummy flavours or brew your own and add some ginger or something soothing yet energising.

I just drank water..

I've heard a lot of people drink coconut water but I'm not a big fan, at least I havent found any I really like yet. I drank kombucha during labour and it definetly helped with nausea.

I used an organic sports drink at my co-op called Recharge. My midwife recommended it, it was easy, and it tasted really good.

It looks like it comes in plastic now, though. At the time it was in glass bottles, which I liked.

omg, my dh made the yummiest drink for me. I always drank Recharge, lemon flavor, but this time i had:

in a 20 oz. bottle,
squeeze half a lemon
5 drops stevia
pinch of sea salt

of course adjust to taste, but I found each ingredient essential. the sweet and tart and sour all made the others taste better. sometimes i forget one, like salt, and it is NOT the same...

p.s. Cademyn, this is Saskiasmom from htg. Congratulations!!

Chicken broth is one of the most powerful natural electrolyte sources out there. One time when I was badly dehydrated I had a dream where a woman led me to some chicken broth and pointed to it. I looked it up the next day and found out it is a powerful rehydrator. It might have something to do with the hyaluronic acid in it.

you can google labor aid/aide/ade and there are lots of recipes. I seem to recall they have lemon juice, honey, and calcium magnesium tablets. I made some and never used it (that I recall). I drank what water I could.

Interesting! I can't imagine chicken broth sounding good while I'm in labor but at least it's something I always have around.

a friend gave me this recipe. my labor was so fast i wound up not drinking it at all, just a little water, but it sounded good:

Labor Ade

2/3 c lemon juice
2/3 c honey
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 - 2 calcium tabs
water of juice fill to 2 qts or freeze in ice cubes and add to water or juice in cup

I hadn't yet discovered TF when I was pg with DS, but during labor with him I drank a lot of red raspberry leaf tea with honey.

Nor did I have any special "electrolite beverage" with either of my other births either. I ate normally if I was hungry, didn't eat if I wasn't, and drank a lot of water or diluted juice (as I'd been doing the whole pregnancy.)

i was going to use coconut water but wasn't in labor long enough to really need much of anything but afterwards i had some coconut water that was mixed with apricot nectar i think? it came in an individual sized carton from our hfs. don't remember the brand, but it was really good.

Last time I drink some Emergen-C as that was all that was available due to a very long story. I had hoped to have some RRL tea brewing or maybe some Laborade-next time hopefully it won't be so crazy during labor. I also ate bananas and toast.

i love warm lemon honey water, it's what my mom always made us when we were sick (well, that or the horrid umemboshi paste which i don't have such fond memories of, lol). also a young coconut sounds good or emergenC.
