Monster House

Okay, I don't consider myself uptight at all, but I can be a bit of a prude when it comes to the movies ds (6) watches.

He talked me into renting "Monster House" last night. It is PG, and we just watched another PG movie that wasn't so bad recently, so I said yes.

I thought the movie was awful!

Lets see, they say "we're screwed", "I suck", one of the boys pretends to tell his Dad to "kiss his hairy butt". The parents in the movie don't appear to care about the kid, and they leave him (apparently for a few days?) with a babysitter who not only doesn't care but is mean to him. She calls the boy and his friend "losers".
The kids also steal cold medicine from one of the kid's dad's pharmacy.

Plus the neighbor's wife used to be a "fat" lady in a circus, and she is portrayed as getting rotten food and other objects thrown at her because of the way she looks. She then becomes "the house" and eats children and toys.:

I guess this movie bothered me on many different levels.
Ds liked it and did not want us to turn it off. So we just ignored the language but I did have a talk with him about treating people with kindness, and not judging people on looks etc.

We've only just started watching some of the Disney/Pixxar movies (I don't do Disney). So I guess I was a little shocked, that's all.

You might find Kids In Mind helpful in future.

Thanks, I guess I was complacent because a few of my friends/relatives with children the same age have let their kids watch it. I should have done more research.
I know it's not the worst movie out there, but I thought it was totally inappropriate for my 6 year old.

Last year, when dd was 6, she was invited to a birthday party where this was shown - I wish I had checked it out first! She had to leave early, in tears, because it freaked her out so much. :

My daughter was 5 when they showed Monster House in her daycare. She found it very scary and seemed rather traumatized. Even now, 3 years later, she mentions it occarionally because it stands out in her mind. I have offered to watch it with her so we can really discuss it, but she still doesn't want to see it again.

Even though it is only rated PG, it seems to be a rather "dark" story. The way my daughter describes it, you would think it is a kids horror movie.

Totally! I think it's very heavy for kids, even 8-11 year olds who it seems really targeted towards. I just don't get why they ever made it, though I can say that about a lot of kids films I guess.

DH bought this for Halloween probably 2 years (?) back and when we watched it we were ALL appalled. That movie left me stunned. There are literally too many awful things to even mention. Yeah, that one was never played again in our house.

I have never seen this movie but my little sister who is 8 (she was 7 when the movie came out) saw it and she was really freaked out-- the movie really scared her and my mom was upset by the content so they left the theater in the middle of the movie.

Well, personally I thought monster house was a good movie but I agree that it is not suitable for small children. I'm a grown woman and it even freaked me out bit. I don't think it should have been rated pg.

It is a weird one isn't it! My THREE year old watched and loved it-to my horror. We were visiting kid-free friends who live off the grid out in Homer, Alaska. It was the only "kids" movie they had. Whoops.

I liked it, although I don't think they handled the fat lady element of the plot very well. It is, indeed, a horror movie for kids -- hence the Monster part of the title! I think it's more for kids around nine or so -- the age when a certain number start getting into Goosebumps and other scary stories? This movie is for those kids.

I definitely agree that it's a kid's "horror" movie, there's really not anything that recommends or redeems it.
