Choosing a karate school for an 8 year old

My son has been taking karate at a church once a week. He wants to go to a school where he can go at least twice a week. I want to make sure the school isn't all about fighting and competition, but is more about fitness and discipline and self-confidence and self-control. How do I go about choosing a karate school?

The schools are usually very open about discussing their philosophy with parents. If they aren't -- LEAVE. You may wish to talk with the teacher at the church that you son is already taking from. One warning though, several karate schools here require a 1 year contract and that has been bad news for many people I know.

try looking for a "mixed martial arts" school rather than a karate school. they cost much less because they're non-competitive, and the uniforms and belts are usually included with the fees. they also sit down with the kids during class and discuss values, safety, education and lots of other topics. the parents at our school also receive books of what behaviors and values are being taught so we can reinforce it at home. it's all about honesty and integrity, personal responsibility, and never being abusive or offensive. my daughter is thriving in the classes and just attained her blue-stripe on her white belt good luck!

I would find a place that does not make you sign a contract. We have a great place locally that my daughter goes to.

Also, you may want to consider going to a place like The Little Gym as they offer karate classes as well.
