soybean oil/lecithin okay for soy allergy??

We saw my son's allergist last week and he gave us a handout that stated studies show most individuals allergic to soy may safely eat soybean oil and soy lecithin. Have any of you heard this or have experience to confirm/negate this? We have been avoiding both of these and I'm not sure I want to experiment at this point TIA!

Some soy allergic people can tolerate oil/lecithin, but not all. If you're really wanting to add those to your diet, you can do a trial of each one (not at the same time).

My children are able to tolerate soy oil and lecithin. Not everyone can though.

My soy allergic dd can tolerate lecithin and oil. Like CS said, trial them each separately to verify.

I agree - trial them separately once soy is out of the diet. My understanding is that if it's an IgE allergy, they are generally fine, but other types of reactions are much more sensitive.

It's true. Many people allergic (IgE) to soy tolerate soybean oil and soy-derived lecithin. However, it really just depends on which proteins in the soy cause problems for you. There are quite a few allergenic proteins in soy and not all of them are present in refined soybean oil, which is what they use to derive lecithin. However, studies show that some folks are allergic to the proteins which do remain and do react to soy lecithin and soybean oil (and soy-derived vitamin E, which is often carried in soybean oil).

I react to lecithin and soybean oil.
