Magnetic play table thoughts?

I want to make DD a play/magnetic table sort of like this, but square.

I'm stumped though on how the magnets work. Is it tin on the bottom? Does anyone know and have some thoughts on what kinds of magnets to use and what kind of objects work well?

DH has the essential construction skills, but the logistics are stumping us a bit.

Is it a wood table with little magnetic bugs and a piece of plexi glass over it to keep them on the table?And maybe there are little tracks cut out for the magnets to drop into and be reachable from the bottom?

Does that make any sense?
