I called my mom this morning to ask her about macaroni and cheese (has anyone else noticed that Kraft changed the recipe?) and she told me that she had a big revelation that she wanted to share with me. I thought she was just being silly.
But then she told me that she realized that I was right about circumcision.
:
I know I've talked about this here before, but my mom has always been the most unwavering person when it came to circ. It was always "the thing we didn't discuss," because every time we tried talking about it we would argue for hours. She thought I was ridiculous, that intact penises were disgusting, everything under the sun. We haven't discussed circ in probably a year at least. I had accepted it as something that we would always disagree on, even after I had children.
She just said that she had been thinking about it, and if it "wasn't broke, then why fix it?" She feels very guilty about circ-ing my brother, which makes me sad, but he's happy and says he doesn't know the difference so he's fine with it (but is against infant circ). She added a bunch of disclaimers like "I still see both sides, I still think it's a decision your husband might have to make, etc. etc.," but I ignored them just because I was so happy to see that she had seen the light.
This is proof that you *can* change peoples minds, even a 60-year-old someone who seems to be stuck in their ways. Just my influence and my passion for intactivism has been able to sway her. I am just so happy!
