That's exactly the right word: puffy. A regular scarf can be brought out a little to form an arc over the forehead, or it can be brought forward a little along the jawline to frame the face better, but an amira just kind of sits where it sits, and where it sits will always make a round face look even more round.

They're awesome for sports and such though ... no pinning or tying to come undone. Some women like them better when they have small kids ... again, no pins to worry about. And they can be nice for wearing under sheer scarves.

This doesn't look too radical does it?

Psst, I used one of DS's playsilks to do it.

Very well, surprisingly. I put it on about four hours ago and I've been housecleaning in it.

Alpine, it looks really cute!

Love it! I think our littles have the same yellow silk. I bet if it started to slip a bobby pin or barette above each ear would hold it.

Mmhhmm.

What this picture doesn't show is the fact that my head is super lumpy. DH always jokes about my skull defomities. I don't know about all that, but I do have a very, um, gnarled, head? Somehow the lumps and bumps keep the cover on without much fuss. Who woulda thunk I'd get some use out of them??

This is one of my favorite finds (but I confess, I found it at WM)

Back view (I had to adjust the lighting, my flash is not working)

And Front view (or how it looks on minus my awful glasses )

So how are my favorite gorgeous covering mamas? Thought I'd share a little more about myself.

I was raised Roman Catholic with a twist! I was a part of many pentacostal/evangelical assorted protestant groups/clubs growing up, because where we lived the catholic church didn't focus on youth very well, and my parents saw benefit in us being raised with a more christian rather than denominational outlook.

I've been reflecting on my desire to cover, and I think I pinpointed the turning point in my life. I spent time in panama living in an indiginous tribe (banana leaf huts and monkeys in the jungle type experience and learned so much about life outside of north america. The women covered their heads, but allowed their legs to show freely! The headcovering was a part of their religious beliefs, and modesty took on a new meaning. They breastfeed freely, arms and legs were not overly covered, but modesty was a way of acting, of living.

Anyways, I've grown so much and right now I'm trying to find a church where I've moved, but my spiritual life is alive in my marriage, mothering and relationship with God.

Well that was a novel, now to the fun part. I love starting discussions in this group, everyone has something insightful to say!

How does your SO feel about your covering, AND... how do they feel/react to your un-covering!

Lil earthmomma i would love to hear more about your experience living with a tribe, my own personal spirituality is very influenced by native south america.

Sorry it took me so long to come back and reply i have been dealing with some stuff in real life that has taken up most of my time. I cover for numerous reasons, one being a sense of modesty and respect, i wear a lot of victorian inspired clothing so long flowing skirts long sleeved tops with not much showing at the bust however tight fitting often over a corset. I started wearing hats and viels and found that i felt safer and more myself when wearing them. Then a few months ago i was having a rather odd conversation with a customer (actually rather run of the mill for our shop ) about hair being psycic antena, and it knind of clicked for me. Basically i have always been sensitive in that area so when i dont cover i am allowing mysellf to be overwhelmed by all the background babble of the other planes as well as this one. I dont get headaches on days i cover and i am able to pick up onthings much easier. I mostly cover the back of my hair and leave my fringe exposed, kind of controling the amount exposed. It is also largly symbolic so not all of my hair has to coverd, if it slips and i dont realise that is ok, it is about the intent. I also hand stitch the hems on my coverings, and i want to start embrodering talismans and charms into them. As i mostly wear black they are often the only splash of colour on me. I will be crocheting some snoods soon, if anyone is interested i could do a how to? it may take me awhile as i have a very full on baby and a new business but it will give me a project.

Clay it is great to see you here! i never knew you covered, do you sew? it would be nice to have someone to have work with on desiging some things to embroder/sew. There are very few resources online for covering pagans i felt very much alone until i saw you here.

My DH is ok with it. He's not Jewish, he's Presbyterian, so he's never come across covering. He's been really cool about it - I never really made a big deal about it, so I think he takes it as normal. He does love my hair, though.

That's very cool! I'd love to hear more!

And a snood tutorial would rock.

Mostly just keeping the thread from getting buried.

My late husband was sort of conflicted back when I was covering hair and face. He liked that he garnered extra respect in the community for having a "religious wife," but didn't personally much care for that degree of coverage. The man I mean to remarry to ... actually I don't know how he'd feel about my covering that much. But I know bodily privacy matters to him a lot, and the fact that he may see more of me than other men bolsters that feeling of connection.

Does anyone have any tricks for keeping on a slippery silk scarf? I have a beautiful one I would/do love to wear as a covering, but it falls off in about 5 minutes.

Try a cotton bandana or headband underneath it.

Or a few hairclips in different spots for your covering to catch on.

well when I first started covering he was neutral about it I guess. he was fine with it. after covering for a while he began to really like it. the more modestly i dressed the closer we became. I believe it was more a spiritual thing than just a clothing thing though... so I'm not sure how much that counts...?
