"Cover"-ed Girls! - Page 49

glad to know i am not the only one who struggles a bit!
i also find that, since i am living with my parents, covering is a bit... weird(?) i am far more comfortable covering when i am visiting my boyfriend or away from home/parents for an extended period of time

we shall see what happens within the next few months!

I'm glad to hear it sounds like pretty normal feelings for a lot of women.

HennyPenny - When I'm doing better spiritually, I do feel much more convicted about it. And it's still in the back of my mind a lot, but then "life" seems to get in the way & I forget about it until it's too late! (I know, not a good excuse.)

PatienceandLove - I totally understand about being more uncomfortable around your parents! I haven't even approached the topic with mine or my in-laws, and I don't look forward to when I do. Unfortunately, they've all grown to be less conservative than they used to be. It makes me very sad anyway, but that's a different story... But they're going to think I'm crazy & too "legalistic" if they hear I want to cover my head... I know my mom (who I'm very close to) will try to argue me out of it. sigh...

My dad used to give me a bit of a hard time covering for Mass, but seems to have moved on.
I think the covering outside of Mass is going to be the sticking point. I at least have my boyfriend on board, so that will make things a bit easier when it comes to covering around the parents.

Oh! And I feel for the "less conservative than they used to be". My parents are a bit like that. Well, my dad more than my mom.

i suppose it depends on the cover you are using but i cover, mostly i wear a scarf just wrapped up around my head/hair. no one even really notices, one girl even was mentioning how odd and weird women who head cover are while i was there with her... she seemed shocked to discover i was 'one of them'

anyway my point being unless you are called to wearing a bonnet or some such would it even truly require a conversation?

Talk to your boss or co-workers first. I converted to Islam and wanted to start covering my hair. I called my boss the night before and talked it over with her. She was so supportive, and just knowing that I had one person in the workplace who was expecting me to show up looking covered and supported me was all I needed. But you'll have your boss...plus all of here on the thread cheering you on

By the way, there are a lot of blogs that show how to be modest/stylish and covered, especially for work/professional environments - check out this list of outfits from my fave blog: http://www.hijabstyle.co.uk/search/label/outfits

Garlands of Grace

I love their new fall collection. I wish I could buy one of everything. I keep buying from coveryourhair.com to try new styles and their prices are good. I want some GOGrace also.
oh wow. some of the new (newer?) garlands of grace are beautiful!
garlands of grace via their website or etsy?
I didn't even know they were on Etsy. Etsy isn't working very well on my computer lately for some reason.

Ironically I hadn't even been on the Garlands of Grace website for quite a while until right before I came & checked this thread! I agree - some of their fall stuff is nice!

Catholic head coverings

To you Catholic mamas,
I haven't been able to read much of this thread yet, since I am new to it, but I am in the RCIA program in a RC church after being born in a protestant home & walking away from God for 11 years. I have been feeling called to wear headcoverings at least during prayer/ devotional time (at mass & in private), and am wondering what is appropriate for a Catholic. Only one elderly woman in my church wears a covering, so it is not the norm and I dont' really have anyone to talk to about it there. I have considered headcovering at all times, and my husband (agnostic, somewhat anti-Catholic) would probably support it since he's pretty easygoing in that way, but am not sure for now and feel that during prayer would be a good start.
Thank you and sorry if I'm asking a question that has already come up!

Hey Shellie!
First off, let me welcome you to our little group!
Second, come join us in the Traditional Catholic Mamas thread. We always loving having more Catholic Mamas!
Third, wear whatever feels comfortable. I go between a black mantilla and a long black scarf. I wear both with the tails flung over my shoulders. (sometimes referred to as "the grace kelly" on pashmina tying sites) I have also been known to use the "tails" if my dress or shirt seems suddenly lower-cut than I thought when I put it on.

I am always on the look out for long skirts for Church. Where do you all find the best deals on them ? I mostly get them from Chadwicks clearance. I am assuming if you cover that you modest dress also for the most part. Let me know.

I am all for not buying anything new if it is not needed. Especially when the kids that make this stuff are not compensated for it. I go to some of the nicer consignment shops and Goodwills in the area. I find tons of stuff with the tags still on them. HTH

Happy to Be Back

Hello ladies! I remember some of you, and have not met others. I am a Pagan mama who covers her head. I recently joined my local Quaker meeting, but still feel connected to my deities by the names I have come to be intimate with. Anyway, I was hit with an unknown autoimmune disorder last year, and just did not have the energy to come here. Took over a year, but I am here again with my follow headcovering mamas. Hi all!! I missed this thread.

Crafty mamas - help me brainstorm :)

OK, I'd love some brainstorming help from those who can sew and/or have more experience with head covering than I do.

Recently I bought some cheap cotton scarves that are 21" X 21". I've already washed & dried them, so that should be their "shrunk" size. My favorite style of covering is like the "Cecily" style at Garlands of Grace - about 9" wide, gathered at the sides, and tied at the base of my neck with ties. I've made my own pattern for that type of style (based on a "headband" I bought at Wal-Mart, of all places!) & I could easily do that with these scarves. But there's enough material to do something different with them too, and I'd like to take advantage of as much of the already-hemmed-sides as possible.

I'm really not a fan of the triangle-shaped scarf on the head (no offense to those who are!), so that's not something I'm considering. Any other brilliant ideas of how to tie these scarves or what style to sew out of them?

You might be able to convert some of these to work with your scarves

Thanks for the ideas! I don't think most of those will work due to the size of the scarves I have, but those were good videos for other styles. And I've never heard of The Style Underground - I always enjoy new websites to browse.

ETA: Thanks for the links to the tying instructions on the Headcoverings by Devorah website, too. I've got that site bookmarked but somehow never stopped to look at the tying instructions!

I hadn't heard of style underground either, but it came up when I was searching for headcover tying videos. The scarves look very nice, though I think I am going to go with some cheaper ones as I get into full-time covering. Once I am more comfy with it, I will invest in more expensive ones.

As for HCbD, she has some lovely tying instructions, along with lovely coverings. I have always enjoyed the items I have recieved.

I really like the idea of the two layers of stretch lace tied the way that they do on their "rectangular scarves" page. For cost though I would totally hit the fabric store first.

Totally!
But I like getting inspiration from spendy places!
