The style underground videos are definitely reinspiring me.

My favorite black scarf disappeared, so I had to buy a new one.
Walmart has some nice-ish scarves that are $5-8.
They also have some patterned triangular scarves that might work for some of the style underground styles.

Target is stocked up on scarves again, as well. Their prices run from around $12.99-15.99. Definitely spendier than Walmart, but a totally different selection.

Recently I bought some cheap cotton scarves that are 21" X 21". I've already washed & dried them, so that should be their "shrunk" size. My favorite style of covering is like the "Cecily" style at Garlands of Grace - about 9" wide, gathered at the sides, and tied at the base of my neck with ties. I've made my own pattern for that type of style (based on a "headband" I bought at Wal-Mart, of all places!) & I could easily do that with these scarves. But there's enough material to do something different with them too, and I'd like to take advantage of as much of the already-hemmed-sides as possible.

I'm really not a fan of the triangle-shaped scarf on the head (no offense to those who are!), so that's not something I'm considering. Any other brilliant ideas of how to tie these scarves or what style to sew out of them?
Here are some other tying ideas

An underscarf will give the scarves something to cling to.
And then you can use barrettes or bobby pins to keep the scarf in place.

Yup, these are the type that I use.

x-posted in the Modest Moms thread in FYT.

Does anyone know of a retail place like Walmart or Target that carries something like a underscarf for a Hijab? I'm not Muslim FWIW I am Catholic.

I was already moving towards covering more of the time with a simple triangle of fabric, but I'm going to have to go to covering more skin in summer from now on due to medications that are making my skin very light sensitive. My Doc recommended a Hijab or something that provided similar coverage of the neck and shoulders - and it's too hot here in TX to wear turtlenecks in July! I'd like to get some now so that by summer I'm well practiced and have found what style works for me.

Scarves are easy as my thrift shop has them for .99 each at the most - often 2/$1, but I've never seen anything like an underscarf there.

And does anyone know anything about the almira hijabs that are easy on? I saw them online, but am hesitant to spend the cash as finances are very tight.

Hmm ... I've never really seen them in available-anywhere retail stores, although a lot of people who use underscarves just use ordinary bandanas rather than anything special.  Online, http://www.veiledbydesign.com has always been the best place to get the specially-made ones.

Although I will say that in the summer most people I know opt for scarf styles that don't use underscarves at all ... avoiding that extra layer of fabric can go a long way towards staying comfortable sometimes.

As for amiras, as far as I know the person to ask around here about them is umsami ... I don't think she comes around this thread much, so if you had questions you might do better to message her.  :)

Thanks Liquesce - I'll check out that site. I also discovered we have a Islamic Women's shop here in town - I need to go over there when I get a chance. I'm a bit intimidated to though since I"m not Muslim. I'm also told there is a shop in our local mall that sells scarves too I"ll probably check there first.

I found lovely scarves today at Walgreens for $5 each, but they were all either Pashimina, Viscose or Silk blends, and since I'm allergic to both wool and Viscose/rayon that let those out. They were BEAUTIFUL though if someone is looking.

Hi ladies! I hope your weekend is going well!

I'm a full time cover-er who has been lurking for awhile.geek.gif I wear headbands to work (although this will change to something that covers more for my new job!) and cover with a bandana at home and at church. My head seems to be shaped funny, so a bandana is the only thing that will stay on by any means short of crazy glue! lol.gif

I wanted to pass along a find! I was at Hobby Lobby last night, and they have an amazing assortment of bandanas! They were a dollar each, and were cuter than just paisley-cowboy-bandanas. I'm going to cut them in half to create triangles and then sew some ribbons on to tie- make them less bulky. I am so excited about them!

Thanks for all of the wonderful resources and fun here- I've been enjoying reading about ladies who value the same things I do!

I was browsing around early this morning for scarves that will go with my new clothes I got yesterday {hit a .25 sale at a school fundraiser and scored TONS of long sleeved tops and modest dresses} and discovered pearl-daisy.com - they have some really neat hijabs and some called a hoojab - it's a scarf with a hood on it for easy wearing. The prices are good too - they are out of the UK and it looked like most scarves were maybe $6-$10 or less in USD.

I'm thinking of ordering a couple hoojabs as I don't like things tight on my neck, so I'll use the hood and then just drape the scarf portion loosely. And I've got my eye on some of their lace hijabs for wearing to Mass - they look very similar to some of my Mantillas but in colors!

PatienceAndLove - I thought you might like those!

I was messing around with my scarves last night and trying to make it work with my hair - how do you do your hair under a hijab/scarf? I've never been able to get my hair to do anything more than a low ponytail and stay in - everything else falls out. My hair is mid-back, but very fine and slippery. Is there a headsock that is similar to a snood where I can just stuff all my hair in loose and not worry about it?

Ak! You ladies know me too well.

I use a large cloth headband that ties, but I really need to get a wig cap.  Those are stretchy, and would hold all your hair, esp if you pull it back in a bun first, and then stretch the cap over the bun.

I actually asked that question on the style underground fb page. She is really awesome about answering any questions you post.

You could also try pre-tied bandanas, like they sell on cover your hair.  Of course, a hijab bonnet would do the same thing.

I usually just twist my hair up onto the back of my head with a claw clip.  My hair is pretty fine/slippery too, so there's always some trial and error to find clips that won't slip, but when you find ones that stay put it works out great.  With the bonus that it gives something really solid to wrap around if you're doing bun wraps or other twisted head wraps.

Hi Everyone,

I haven't read all 50 pages of this thread, but I did see that there were some other covering pagans on here, which make me soooooo happy to see. I have been dressing modestly for almost a year, and have been tempted to cover my hair for most of that time but didn're really know how. I have been doing a ton of looking online and I really, really like tichels. I don't have loads of money right now so I have been making due with a few smaller scarves I have already/ They don't cover everything but they cover the vast majority. A little birdy told me I might be getting a gift card to walmart *ducks* so I thought I'd use that to buy a few scarves.

I am also probably going to be some snoods for work. It's a long story right now, but I don't get on well with my boss, and I have no doubt in my mind if I went to work wearing a tichel I'd get the third degree and/or a ration of dookie for standing out. She knows I'm pagan so I can't really use religion as an excuse.

For the other mamas here who are pagan, or cover due to reasons other than religion, what do you say to people who ask why you cover your hair? Between my boss, my ex, and my family, I am sort of hoping for the best but preparing for the worst. I can already here "WHY are you wearing *that* on your head?"  The best answer I can think of right now is "because I want to and this is how I feel comfortable".

Also, the one problem I am having right now as far as covering is that I have an extremely broad forehead (I actually call it my five head, lol!). I am thinking of sewing some underscarves to wear under the tichel or snood. Has anyone found that the underscarf makes the head covering stay on better? or slip off more easily? I think with a tichel it might be okay, but I don't know if it will work with a snood. Has anyone had any experiences with that?

Anyway, just wanted to say hi to you all. I really like all the links to the pretty things you ladies wear :-)

Wytchy

as an admittedly-inexperienced mama who relies heavily on MDC advice in this department, i need to endorse your best answer.  covering "because you want to" is the best reason.  you know where your impulse is coming from, and you don't have to explain it to anybody.  however, i give you virtual support, too, because it can be hard when most other people around you do not cover.  (or, as in my case, if this is a new and exciting part of your journey, the impulse to explain it properly might be there....although not every listener wants to hear a thesis on modesty, beauty, and God-consciousness.)

on a fashion-related note, i am going to try tomorrow wearing a tichelesque style (with a knot like a giant bun).  i have short hair, actually, and i love that this makes me feel like i have a big pile of hair.  we'll see.  all my students will ask "why are you wearing that?" and i will try to remember my own advice lol.
