Are potatoes healthy?

I mean, are they healthy enough to be eating on a regular basis? We've stopped eating them over the last two years and I know alot of people think they are too starchy. (My MIL, who is on a low carb diet, won't touch them). But we picked some up a huge bag from the farmer's market and have been loving them. And they are so inexpensive that I've been enjoying eating them as a regular part of our diet.

So are there any real reasons why we shouldn't be eating a lot of potatoes?

IMO, unless you have a particular health issue that prevents you from consuming a large amount of carbs, they are perfectly fine. They are a traditional food and a staple for many cultures.

Read this for some interesting info... http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?t...dspice&dbid=48
(He does kind of seem anti-fat, but it is my understanding that you should always eat carbs with some sort of fat - real butter, lard, etc... not deep fried kind of stuff - in order to slow down the metabolism of the carbs.)

thanks for that link! i am 7mths preg & all i wanted for dinner tonight was a big bowl of potatoes (boiled, then sauteed with a bit of oil) with butter, onions, salt, & pepper. i was feeling a bit guilty about it like it was basically a nutritionally devoid food beyond a base carb sort of thing. but you've helped me feel better about my craving

I think potatoes are OK, and are actually pretty good for you IF you eat the skin... which I generally do except when baked, when i just, generally, don't like it... But, I'm trying to LEARN to like it

I had avoided potatoes for years as I was trying to low carb, but since starting TF we have baked them in the oven in their skins with butter and they are awesome! I also put a bit of chicken stock and butter in mashed potatoes to get some stock and butter into my kids.

If organically grown, they are sooooooooooooo very tasty. And since they are grown in nutrient soil that way, they are full of nutrients.

Always add some butter and salt, IMO

I always try to eat them with some source of protein too, in addition to fat. It seems to help my body deal with potatoes. I'm very prone to that sugar crash and I keep thinking potatoes won't do it but they do and awfully so now that I'm pregnant.

My supermarket has been carrying these fingerling potatoes that my DD loves.

I've been wondering this since we eat mashed potatos A LOT. Like every other day a lot.. With the skin, some raw milk, pasture butter, sea salt. MMMM :

Organic potatos are ten million times better tasting than normal grocery store potatos! We found this out two weeks ago.
