Book recommendations for my brother?

Thread Starter
My brother is seventeen and a senior in high school. It has been a LONG time since he's shown any interest in reading. Lately, however, he's gotten into a few books: Angels and Demons by Dan Brown, and something by Stephen King (not sure which book - I'll have to ask my mom).

I would really love to encourage this rekindled reading interest. Can anyone recommend books he might like? Thanks!

Zoology by Ben Dolnick
The author is a young guy maybe about 20 when he wrote it?
Amazon can tell you the plot..
It's tender, heartfelt writing that really reminds you of the feelings you experienced as a teen.

Chuck Palahniuk is a bit subversive, but is often a hit among older teenagers. He is the author of Fight Club, so that might be a good starting place.

If he likes Stephen King, how about Dean Koontz? I read my first Koontz book when I was around 16-17. It was Watchers, and it remains my favorite of his books. Plus Koontz is incredibly prolific so there will be plenty more for your brother to read if he likes his stuff.

Fight Club is a good choice. He also might like Joe Hill (King's son, but he has gone to great lengths not to ride his father's coat tails) or Robert McCammon -- I hear Swansong is a good place to start with McCammon.

The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. It's thick but goes fast and is right scary.

Has he tried the Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini? And of course the LotR and Narnia are classics.

The Crystal Cave by Mary Stuart. Its the Merlin story (King Authur's cousin/magician). It could spawn a lifetime of interest in Autherian Legend, mysticism, literature, politics, travelling etc etc etc. (or maybe thats just me) Seems like a great fit for a teenage boy though er well anyone really

Has he read The Catcher in the Rye yet? If he hasn't read it for school, he may actually enjoy reading it now.
