Way to go Ohio WIC!

I went to a WIC appointment today. We've been before and I noticed that all of the WIC paperwork and handouts had a blurb about how great breastfeeding is. Today, I went back and there was even more. There was a BIG banner that said "Breastfeeding Friendly Zone," a poster that talked about the risks of FFing (as opposed to the benefits of BFing) and had a chart with all the stuff formula has (fat, carbs, vitamins, etc), versus all the stuff BM has (all that plus anti-virals, immunities, etc). It was great - the pro-BFing info was everywhere! Of course, it's most likely to save WIC money since their budget's been cut and more BFing means less free formula, but it was still encouraging to see.

Awesome!

Now if they would only get their rear in gear for supporting breastfeeding beyond 12 months! (all WIC, not just OH )

That's great to hear!! Thanks for sharing the news! Hopefully other WIC offices and states will catch on soon.

I bet that the "risks of formula" sign wont last long. I just received an email at work about not promoting that. Its just silly. BUT they dont want to offend anyone. Since formula REALLY does cause adverse side effects I don't see what the problem is in WARNING people. Kinda like ciggarete warnings.

Yeah! As a fellow Ohioan I am glad to hear that!

Mine (in tx) had a bunch as well. It had some cute posters too, ya know the one with the cow feeding the calf covered up with the blanket? And the one comparing the mom quietly breastfeeding on a bench to another mom yelling at her kids in a grocery store cart, and it says which mom do you think gets criticized more? I'm not sure they'll save that much more money since they just give the breastfeeding mom more food.

I was about to say "oh fo' jeesie they will save a ton! Have you seen the price of formula?!" Then I remember reading that formula companies subsidize WIC I don't know if it is a rumor or not, but I guess at least they (F companies) are doing something productive

thats awesome! and just a thought on the offending thing... telling moms who formula feed that they are bad mothers and killing their babies is offensive and wrong. stating the risks that formula may have is giving mothers pertinent information so that they can make an informed choice. i would find it more offensive if i were not given all of the information necessary to make good choices simply b/c someone might find that information offensive. wic should be about education.
