Advice...witch costume from playsilks?

A clever coop mama suggested making a witch costume from playsilks (similar to these skirts.) I purchased 6, 3 black and 3 white that I dyed in shades of purple. Now I'm not sure how to sew them up. Any suggestions? I have some other black fabric, like broadcloth and velour to make a top. My dd is 2.

For a skirt you could make a loop of elastic and then just fold the corner(or more to get the right length) of each silk over the elastic and stitch closed.

Does that make sense?

How big are the playsilks, and how big is your daughter?

My dd is 2, average height. I got the smallest playsilks I could find, 22" x 22". I tried just folding them over a shoelace and tying it around her to get the general idea, and it didn't look bad. A little long, though, and they are really scrunched (I used 4 to get an even layering of colors) and it's not flowy. Maybe I need to cut them and use smaller pieces? Maybe pink the edges?

While I'm at it...any ideas for an easy hat? I'm thinking I can just wing it with some heavy felt.

Since I should have more than enough silks, what do you guys think about a matching cape, purple outside and black inside? Is that witchy? I didn't think about making a cape until my sister asked me if that would be part of the costume. It's so easy to make a beautiful cape with playsilks.

Definitely use felt for the hat. Here's a good, free pattern for that.

What I would do for the dress would be to sew the ends to two playsilks together like this. (sew where the x's are)

XXXXXX____XXXXXX
l...........................l
l...........................l
X.........................X
X.........................X
X.........................X
X.........................X
---------------------

Then just use ribbon or something as a belt, and have her wear a long sleeved shirt and leggings underneath.

Ooh, thanks for the hat pattern!! I am totally lost by your description of how to sew the silks together. Could you tell me in a different way?

I have a navy blue top and leggings that I think will work.

Basically when you're sewing the playsilks together you're forming a pillowcase, except that you're leaving openings for your child's head and arms.
