??? for those who have had tough thrush

Ok, I just opened the box that said "Breastfeeding" in preparation for the baby due any day now to wash tops and bras, and I realized that some of the items in there are things I wore when I actively had thrush. I always wore nursing pads, but we all know there's some leakage onto the bra.

To give some history, I had very resistant thrush and basically had to go all the way on Dr. Newman's thrush protocol to get rid of it, plus we also took steps in our home to get rid of yeast (didn't use towels, changed laundering habits, diet, etc.) Everything I wore when I had thrush was washed and dried HOT with vinegar, as was everything that touched my son's mouth.

My question is, should I use the stuff with the new baby or should I not risk the chance there's yeast in the fabric and just toss them and buy new. I do have hand me downs from friends who never had thrush, so I wouldn't be starting over completely.

I would definitely toss those items. Thrush is SO horrible, you don't want to risk it again!

I asked my midwife today and she recommended HOT water (like scalding) and borax soak until the water cools with a regular rinse.

She also said, on a practical point, that the yeast may have died, since the last time the clothes were used was over a year ago, and the thrush was handled 2 years ago.

i would think that if you soaked them in boiling water first, then wash, it would be ok. i have been rinsing all my clothes with vinegar too.

I had this same problem when BFing DS2 and my midwife just told me to boil wash everything for 10-15 minutes which I did. DD is now 5 mths and so far, so good. It was a bit of a risk but I couldn't afford to replace my things..

We did a HOT borax soak, then rinsed and washed HOT with Borax and soap, plus vinegar rinse. I also found this information about borax and yeast: http://www.madsci.org/posts/archives...9202.Mi.r.html
