Help me out here girls,
Since so many of us October Moms have already had their babies, I thought I'd post this here.. I did post a similar thread in the 'life with babes' section, but didn't have very many replies.

I'm trying to figure out if my son Samuel born 10-1-08, might have more then just your 'normal' amount of infant reflux going on ?

My middle child Ian had reflux really bad for his first year.. so that does make me jumpy I'm sure. Ian's started out as silent reflux btw.

Samuel frequently makes spit up sounds, or wet throaty sounds, with even his stomach heaving some, but nothing comes up. He may.. or may not cry after this happens.

He does spit up.. but more like 3-5 times a day, not seemingly excessively to me? Though he's usually very fussy up until the spit-up.. then relaxes after?

Biggest issues I'm having come in the night time, after we've had a few hours of horizontal sleep together, and usually at least one feeding lying down. He will start to root around and make a lot of noise (though not necessarily be awake), then he gets fussy and wants on and off the boob... and it can go on into full blown screaming.... this is typically happening every night.. for 2-3 hrs straight!!!!!!!!

Whereas if I sleep with him on our reclining sofas, aka I'm in a recliner and he's upright, he typically just wakes to eat and have diaper changes, and goes back to sleep at night.

He also has 'wet sounding burps' .. where nothing comes out.. most of the time. He has huge and frequent burps too, even hrs after/between feedings?

I think he's growing well, but then so did Ian (Ian nursed to comfort his pain.. and got huge/fat quick).

I don't know....
Maybe I'm just an over tired Mama grasping at strings..... but I definitely do notice in the daytime he does better (sleeps almost all day, between feedings/changes). But he's pretty much always held upright in the daytime, we nurse upright, he's carried either on our shoulder or in a sling.. upright etc.

Samuel like Ian hates to be laid down.. and will not sleep laying flat (unless he's just nursed in bed and falls asleep that way by accident).

I didn't 'catch' the reflux in my older child until he was 3 months old, and he screamed most of his first three months.. till we started changing the way we worked with him (doing everything upright, sleeping him at a 45degree angle, and having him on meds). I only figured out he had reflux because of other Mommies telling me about it.. then I told our doctor.. sigh

Anybody want to tell me he's normal .. or that we should be looking into reflux more.. ?? I'd really prefer him to be normal, but just in the past day or so I've started treating him 'as if' he had reflux, and he's becoming a much milder child. Granted I haven't given him any meds, only done home measures.

Are your babies doing this same stuff, or is mine 'different' .. aka should I be concerned.. or am I freaking over nothing??

Thanks, I'll add a poll to make it easy for us tired PP Mamas to participate.. but please feel free to leave detailed replies as well!

Hey I couldn't figure out just how to vote on the poll, but my son is doing just about the same thing. I'm questioning reflux but hoping it will pass.

Yea, this is all new to me, my first child never spit up at all...now this one is a frequently spits up and I don't know what is considered "normal", or not normal. I am hoping there is nothing to do with reflux issues and we just work through this stage, but the thought has occured to me as well. My son was also born early..(36wks), so I never know what to expect that might be different from a full term baby. Sorry I don't have any answers for you, I hope you get it figured out and it is a stage that just passes, good luck.

I would get him a bed wedge, see if that helps. right now i would say not reflux, because there isn't that muh spitting up. if that doesn't help then maybe take him to pedi to get checked.

I hope none of us have reflux babes ..... having had one in the past it is terrible for the babe and for you!

Selena my first had 'silent reflux' to start with, which means the acid would come up and burn his throat (aka the spit-up) and instead of spitting it out.. he'd swallow it and it would burn all the way down again. So not spitting up.. isn't enough reassurance for me.
It wasn't until he was on meds that he started to spit up regularly (which was easier on him.. then having it burn back down again).

I don't know.. for now I'm treating him 'as if' he does, since it won't hurt to keep him upright after feeds, burp him extra, sleep him on a incline, etc

this sounds an awful lot like ally rae. we're also thinking maybe some reflux because dh has it pretty severely and has had since he was a baby. she saw her dr yesterday and he said he's not concerned but did recommend infant acidophilis drops.

Annie prefers to nurse wiyh me sitting up also and will cry if i try sidelying at night. i don't think that she has reflux.

you know best mama and if your home measures seem to make things better than keep it up until you feel something else needs to be done.
