I never thought I would as this, but does anyone have info in FGM and RIC. I am in a "discussion" with my sister who thinks RIC and FGM are "nothing alike FGM is mutilation" she's 16 so nothing too deep. I am linking her to this thread.

silly girl. Don't argue with your big sister.

Well, this was always a good site: http://www.fgmnetwork.org/intro/mgmfgm.html

And here is a Finnish site which doesn't discuss MGM but if you look at FGM type I and II and ask is that really greater than MGM?

I Ritual circumcision:
The clitoris is wounded by pricking it with a needle or by pinching it so as to make a few drops of blood run. In Somalia even this way is called "sunna".

II Sunna:
The covering of the clitoris is removed, not the clitoris itself.
To me, type one would be less than, type two would be equal to but they are all banned. So perhaps that would give her something to think about.

I know there was a thread that compared FGM and MGM a while back and for some reason I thought Perspective started it. The link did a nice job comparing the two types of genital cutting. I'll try and find it.

I'll be happy to help right now if I can. Please ask her what she feels the difference is.

The only differences between FGM and MGM is the amount of tissue that is cut off, and the difference between the sexes, of course. Then there is the thing that FGM has been outlawed (because it is mutilation), but Male Genital Mutilation still hasn't.

Pain is pain, boys feel as much pain as girls do. There might be links to videos of FGM as well. I know there are links to MGM.

Does it matter if they are different? If it's medically unnecessary, it is unethical to do it.

She's 16, change the game plan on her. Make her prove to you it is ethical, as a first step. Come up with some things you can both agree with about ethics and/or values and then go from there.

I just noticed this that compares: http://www.nocirc.org/articles/similar.php

Some of the "medical benefits" of FGM: http://www.mothering.com/discussions...4&postcount=25
(very similar to some reasons given for MGM but utterly ridiculous at the same time.)
Hope that helps.

Male circumcision happens under medical supervision, unlike the majority of female circumcision rituals. [Wrong: male circumcision is widespread under tribal conditions in Africa and performed by non-medical people throughout the Islamic world. FGC is performed by medical personnel in Indonesia.] Female genital mutilation typically occurs in a village where there is no medical care. The girls do not receive any anesthesia, which is rarely the case with male circumcision, and the instruments are not sterilized. FGM also tends to be carried out by people trained as the village’s “circumciser,” but not by someone with medical training, meaning the cuts are jagged an inexact.
they fail to correct the bolded part. I believe the stats are that a majority of RIC is performed by OBs, who only use anesthesia about 20% of the time. I don't know the overall statistic, but I'm guessing maybe 50% of babies receive anesthesia. And of course we know that the different forms of anesthesia carry varying degrees of effectiveness (lidocaine injection vs. sugar water pacifier).

Sorry to go OT on you but what does being Republican have to to with your circ position?

Being both passionately anti-circ and politically leaning republican I don't see the connection.

good info so far!

Maybe she'd understand that the main difference is that we don't cut girls here. It's culture that makes us accept MGM (even making us avoid calling it what it is even) and think FGM is horrid and not the same. Cutting off part of someone's genitalia is cutting off part someone's genitalia the sex of the victim doesn't matter so much.
