Well, #@$#&!

So, ds has been doing awesome. It seemed like we'd figured out all the foods to avoid. Then, last night we were out at dinner time, so I ordered a plain chicken breast at a restaurant. They told us it was plain. I really shouldn't have eaten it, because when I tasted it, I could tell it had been seasoned somehow, probably marinated or something. Last night, ds spit up at about 10pm. It was just after he nursed and what came up was thin and milky. So, I wasn't sure if it was related to food or if it was just a fluke (however, since we've been allergen free, he's spit up maybe twice).

Anyway, today, I ate some Applegate hot dogs (yes, breakfast of champions), since I didn't have any meat defrosted and I was starving. This was about 10:00am. Then, in the afternoon, he started spitting up more frequently. Globby and white. He's done it about 4 times now, plus he's burping a lot and has gas. An hour ago, he pooped a glob of mucus.

Sooooo, what was it? The seasoning in the chicken? Chicken in general (the hotdogs were chicken)? I read the package of hot dogs and I even called the company a few weeks ago and they said the sodium lactate was from beets. But I just looked online and the ingredients list both sodium lactate from beets AND lactic acid starter culture "not from milk." So, it's probably corn, right? But I swear, I ate the applegate beef hotdogs last week at a cook-out and ds had no problem. And I've eaten chicken before without any problems. (Please, please don't be chicken!)

I hate these food mysteries: Oh, and to complicate matters, tonight was the night I was going to trial lentils (ds reacts to chickpeas and black beans, but not peas, hence the lentil trial). I made the soup earlier in the day and I didn't have anything else to eat, so I went ahead and ate it, but with all this puking, I won't be able to tell what's going on. Grrrrr.

If you want to take a stab at solving the mystery, I'm all ears.

That sucks. I'm going to vote for the restaurant chicken. Who knows what was in it- maybe it was marinated or injected with something and then frozen and shipped to them. So then they say it's 'plain' because they didn't add anything, kwim?

I totally vote Restaurant chicken. Who knows where/how they cooked it, or if they put butter all over it or what. They put butter all over everything, as I'm sure you know. Anyway, I vote for that because it seems like the most obvious, and because it would be the easiest thing for you to deal with. Chicken (meat in general) is just not very allergenic. I know, it can be anything, but really it probably isn't.

oh - cross posted with cs and we wrote practically the same thing, word for word!

ITA with the votes for restaurant chicken. If not injected with or marinated with or seasoned with or sprayed with something, there's the whole cross-contamination issue. What surface was it cooked on? How was that surface cleaned? Was any oil or cooking spray used? ETC.

Yeah- stupid restaurants. Who needs 'em, anyway.

Oh, mamas, I reeealllly hope that's what it was! Thanks for the encouragement and please cross your fingers! It would suck to lose chicken. Though, I could (if I tried really really hard) live without hotdogs

ick I'm sorry! I really hope you don't lose a food! I vote restaurant too though, I swear most of the servers don't even comprehend what "allergy" means : I never go out now, but even when it was "just" dairy it was still almost impossible

I know. I had dh order it before I got there (we were in separate cars) and I don't think he grilled the cook like I would have. I'm sure he didn't even think of it. Outback is the only restaurant I feel comfortable with. Dh laughs at me because I always order a boring steak, plain sweet potato and steamed broccoli. But for some reason, food tastes better when I don't have to cook it

Totally true. Yet, somehow no matter what I eat at a restaurant and how confident I am that it is free of allergens, dd still reacts. Every time.

I'm betting on the restaurant too. I hope your ds feels better soon.

I vote restaurant chicken as well! I hope it passes soon!

Late to the party, here, but I also vote restaurant chicken. I hope the rxn passes quickly.

That's what I had when we went last week -- great minds think alike!!

Oh, I'm SURE it was the restaurant chicken (I didn't mean that to sound sarcastic, just REALLY positive thinking). It is not high on the "likely scale" that he is having trouble with regular chicken. Applegate Farms really is dairy free so I wouldn't worry about that. Hopefully his belly gets better quickly and you can get a good lentil trial in.

Restaurant chicken.

DS' school has "plain grilled" chicken they offered him...I asked to see the package. Injected with who-knows-what, and grill marks are colored on with "caramel coloring."

Steak and sweet potato - that's my order, too! And then I get another sweet potato for dessert.

I would totally cast my vote for the restaurant chicken.

Back in the, ahem, day, when I was still an allergy rookie, I was actually getting chicken breasts from McDs. And more recently even from Noodles restaurant. And I felt like the baby reacted but was hard to tell at that time because she was so far from clear anyways.

I finally found out that Noodles has a big allergy page. It has items on the left, allergens on the top, and the boxes are checked for what they have in them. Their chicken has wheat. BUT, their braised beef does not. So now from Noodles I order the following, which is free from wheat/diary/corn/soy/eggs/tomatoes/potatoes:

2 sides of rice noodles in one container
braised beef
steamed veggie mix: carrots, broccoli, onions, cabbage
3 containers of balsamic vinaigrette salad dressing

It isn't great, but pretty good. THey have one menu item that has balsamic vinegar, but that isn't safe (corn or soy, I forget). But the SALAD dressing is, so I dump that on the rice noodes/veggies/beef and it isn't too bad. I've had it several times now.

Thanks for the heads up on OutBack, I can add another restaurant I can eat at. I have Noodles, Outback, and Good Earth, which is near me and caters pretty well. I get plain jasmine rice, steamed brocolli, can terryaki chicken there which has no wheat/corn/soy and they have a bottle of olive oil they will bring out to the table for me.

Let us know how your lo is doing!

Thanks for the food recs! I'm going to have to track down a Noodles

Ds is doing great today. No more spitting up or gas. He hasn't pooped yet, so I don't know about that, but given that he has no other digestive troubles, I'm assuming he's okay. So, I guess it was the restaurant chicken.

Also, it appears that we can eat lentils!!!! I had them for dinner last night and today for lunch and it's not causing him any problems. This is SUCH a relief to me. We are such a bean eating family. Lentils aren't as awesome as black beans, but I'll take 'em!

Thanks to everyone for your encouragement!
