CD on the cheap

I'm using the RRW pattern to make a cover for my son. I am using old jeans for the outside, old flannel pjs for the side touching his skin, and some waterproofing for the inner layer...I was wondering if I could use a vinyl tablecloth (like the ones at the dollar tree) for a waterproofing layer. TIA!

I think you should be able to use the vinal table cloth. I have used cheap shower curtains(2 layers work best) and an old rain coat that had holes in it. These were sewed into the diaper and have worked well for me. My covers are made out of wool sweaters that I got at the good will.

The vinyl/oilcloth table cloths don't tend to hold up for lots of repeated washings. So if you want to go that route, you want to make sure of 2 things. 1) Make LOTS of inserts-- the more absorbency the less likely you'll have to deal with leaks. 2) that you're prepared for waterproof failure. You could use that waterproofing spry if you want, like you get for camping gear.

ooooooohhh! great idea with the table cloth idea! i figure if they don't poop on the cover you could just rinse in hot water and hang dry? that would make it last longer, it think. i just started making diapers and didn't want to have to by pul or windpro...i like the waterproofing spray too...have ta look for it!!

thanks!!

Table cloth/ shower curtain will. not. work. It is just a waste of time and energy- they fall apart, bunch up, etc (been there, done that)... Not only that, if you sew them into the dipe, your kid's skin cannot breathe, setting them up for yeast infections, diaper rash, impetigo...

Go to Wal-Mart, spend $6 on a pack of "plastic pants"-- they should last long enough to get kiddo through a size. Even these will fall apart, with hand washing and hang drying (ahem, been there, done that). But they only cost $1 each, and are readily available in almost every town-- no shipping charges.
And kiddo can wear normal pants/shorts over them. This would be the equivilant of using a thrifted raincoat for material.

Waterproofing spray is a bunch of toxic chemicals... directly in contact with or near your baby's reproductive organs... 24 hours a day...

Wool covers can be had for next to nothing as well. Pick up some soft wool sweaters at the thrift store (at least 80% wool), take them home and shrink them. Tons of free patterns on the web. Make longies, shorties, or skirties and you don't have to worry about seperate pants/bottoms. Make wrap style and use normal pants over them.

I would not. That's a lot of work to have the tablecloth layer fail, and it most likely will. I probably wouldn't be too keen on using a dollar-store vinyl on my baby's bottom, either. I would guess that you'll be much, much happier with either a wool cover, or using pul in the covers you're making. Wool covers can be used repeatedly, so you only need a few. Even if you buy them new, you'll save money and a whole lot of time.
