Bowflex or other gym equipment recommendations

DP quit smoking: and hasn't had a cigarette in over 6 months. He is overweight and now he wants to get in shape. He won a poker tournament and instead of banking the money like he normally would - I convinced him to spend it on himself.

He spent last weekend cleaning the garage, he installed a heater, a carpet, and a TV for sports. He is tuning it into a gym. Now for the exercise equipment. What should we get? He is thinking a bowflex or something similar so he can work all parts of the body.

I am clueless when it comes to this stuff. What should we be looking for? Certain brands, etc?

Also, for Christmas I am going to add to him gym. So far I've thought of a jumprope, sweat towels, little water cooler. What other little things can I get?

Oh - I should add that he has $600 to spend on his equipment. We would like to buy used if possible.

thanks!

I would personally skip the gym (and I wouldn't do a Bowflex anyhow....it's just not physiologically sound in the way that in engages the muscles) and spend the money on an olympic bar, pull up bar, free weights, jump rope, sandbags, medicine balls etc. You will have far more versatility and you will get into shape alot faster. You need very little equipment to get a great workout.

Congratulations on making the leap! It's wonderful to make an investment in yourself.

I agree with firefaery. the only other thing I would add would be a kettlebell or two.

who doesn't love a kettlebell? They are totally versatile and you can even accomplish alot with one-let alone a pair.

We have a full set in our gym and they get a TON of lovin'!

I am trying to convince my dh that he does not need a bowflex either. I am having a great time just doing bodyweight exercises, using my weights and stability ball. He thinks that weights are boring . The thing is he has never done a workout with me. The kids have (they have tiny 2lb weights- its so cute), but dh hasn't. Maybe its time for a family workout. :

what?!?!?!?!?!?! I am deeply shocked.

He just needs to learn some good lifts. Noone would call a snatch or a clean and jerk boring!

I think it's time you initiate him. Yay for family fitness!

Snatch is my favorite lift. Although it is also the same lift that caused my husband to tell me I was too intense and refuse to workout with me anymore. )

We don't have kettlebells (yet ) Just wondering what weight you do the snatch with? I was checking out some videos and the kettlebell exercises look really intense.

I used to use 10lb free weights for most of my upper body strength training but have moved up to 15lbs.

Would a 15lb kettlebell be ok?
