Flannel question

Ok, I have a pattern that gives suggestions for the soaker pocket absorbent thing you use in pocket diapers. Stuffer? Doubler? Whatever. I think you know what I'm talking about. Hopefully. Maybe. Probably not.

Anyway, it suggests if you use flannel use something like 8 layers. Now... this flannel, could it be, say, any kind of flannel? Would the cute, cheap flannel currently on sale at Joann's work? Or is there a specific diaper flannel that needs to be used?

I don't plan to make all my insert thingamajigs (what IS the word for the absorbent thing that goes in the pocket?) out of flannel, but I'd like to at least try a few.

Thanks!

And if you were able to understand what I'm talking about, kudos to you!

Yes I know exactly what you are talking about. I call them inserts when I use them with pockets and doublers when I use them with PFs!

Flannel rocks! I use old flannel sheets and old flannel shirts for my diaper flannel. I make my inserts six layers. They are really absorbent at that thickness and would probably take too long any thicker, and your machine might revolt anyway. Mine sure would.

Let me know if you need any help.

Flannel is one of my favorite fabrics for diapers too. It's always wise to make a test diaper and see what you think. Flannel comes in many different weights. Light weight flannel you may need 8 layers, but if you're using a heavier flannel - that may be overkill, making the diaper overly large (bubble butt) and/or making it take an excessive amount of time to dry.
Hope that helps and enjoy your sewing!

My fitteds have just the cheap flannel from Joann's, usually white. But my mom is making some with terry cloth that is working very well.
