Newborn Hep B

My baby was born 10/20 @ 8:31 pm. It was an induction ( well thought out and wholey my choice) During the day I was asked about many things the baby had TONS of meconium but handled everything well.

I was informed because of the meconium the NICU docs would come to the delivery and suction him. I informed the nurse we would be forgoing the VitK shot, eye ointment Hep B and circ. Know what she said?

I dont blame you I think most of this is a bunch of crap. I will go remove all those items from his cart ( room in situation) that way no one will be able to make a mistake and accidently give him anything you dont want. AND SHE DID!

No one blinked when they REaffirmed... NO vit K, eye ointment, hep b or circ correct... I guess its becoming more and more common place where I live.

fyi he was 10lb1oz, 22 3/4in , 15 1/2 in head ( we tried a epidural but it didnt take so no pain meds 5 pushes!)

Congrats! So glad they listened to you.

I hope you were still mobile and able to switch positions during pushing.

That's awesome. A totally different experience than what I went through. I had to fight tooth and nail for two days. It was nasty!

Though had you had to fight...it is satisfying that you stood up and got your way?

Wow, and you're in Maryland! Sometimes I feel like the lone piece of granola floating around here...LOL. What hospital did you birth at? We'll be planning for another homebirth with baby #2, but I'd love to have a place that won't hassle us for those choices in the event that we'd have to transfer.

That is great!!!! I didn't have much problems saying no to those things either (im in CT) (although I did do the Vitamin K shot since I ended up with a VERY long hard labor that resulted in a c-section...regret it now but can't go back). They did make me sign a waiver for the Hep B shot.

Oh that's good! The nurses didn't blink an eye when we refused Hep B at our hospital either! Our doctor advised against the Hep B shot anyway

Our OB also advised against HepB... in fact the hospital doesn't give it routinely to newborns. He also was anti-circ... but went on to say that sadly 95% of baby boys in this area are circed

Makes me wonder what some of the nurses who DON'T say anything really think.

No, it was very disheartening and infuriating that my birth plan was so disrespected. They (Woman's Hospital in Baton Rouge, LA) were especially terrible and abusive towards us about declining the Vitamin K. We were harrassed and threatened for two days. It was a mess. I was not going to back down, no matter what. They finally figured that out, but they made what should have been a time of joy and focus on my newborn a very stressful experience. It was satisfying only in the sense that my child remained the way nature intended for her to be....

We had a similar experience. And the ped also said he was glad we weren't circing--he said the only reason docs do it anymore is to bill you an extra $120.:

Wow...that's cheap...they rake in about $300 to mutilate baby boys in my area!

Congratulations! I'm a wee jealous! They called CPS on us for refusing vit K!

I had one nurse I really liked. She did ask if i had done research or was just going on hear say. LOL it was kind of a polite knowledge quiz without being pushy. i started quoting stats about the vit K she smiled and said she was glad to know there were moms out there that looked out for their babies and knew the whys and why nots of wht was going on. I did tell her if she had an oral vit K option i would do that but I couldnt see injecting him with 20000x the normal amount while vit K occurs in the gut but doesnt naturall kick in till day 8. She just smiled and winked and say good deal momma LOL.
