xpost Miscarriage Question...is this normal? UPDATE #6!!!

I have an appt with my RE tomorrow, so apparently they don't think it's too normal. But I didn't get much info from the nurse and am curious to see what this means.

I had an ultrasound last week that showed my pregnancy had stopped between 5 and 6 weeks. I was on hormones, so she instructed me to stop the hormones so my body could do it's thing and told me to let her know when my period started. I stopped the hormones on Tues, cramping started Thurs and bleeding started Friday.

However, the bleeding has been dark brown (almost black), not red at all. And not very heavy. Usually with a normal period the first day and a half would be heavy, then normal flow until it tapered off. This has started at normal flow or less. Like one pad a day would work fine. Also last night my ovaries started hurting again, I was clammy, queezy and had diarhea half the night. This morning I woke up with cramps again.

They plan to do an ultrasound and blood work tomorrow AM. Just wondering if anyone knows what this could mean? Does it sound normal to you? My instincts are telling me something is wrong.

Thanks for any input.

Tara - I just wanted to send you and If the blood is brown, I've always heard that means it is old blood. Like blood your body loss some time ago, but is only exiting the body now. I had some of that with my miscarriage before the red blood started. I hope you get your answers tomorrow.

How long did you have the old blood before the red blood started? I'm going on 7 days tomorrow and the bleeding seems to be tapering off now. Did yours taper off first before red blood came?

With all 3 of my losses I had a few days of brown blood before it changed to red and clots.

I'm sorry you are going through this.

Well, I lost twins (twin a was lost 1.5 weeks before twin b). So, you might not be the same. However, I had brown blood for about a week before it turned to pinkish and red. At that time we found out we lost twin a. After that I had stages of red blood and stages of brown blood until the total miscarriage started (lots of blood & clots) about 4 days later. I don't know if that helps, but there it is. I'm so sorry you're going thru this.

Well I went in for my appt this AM. Initially based on the u/s we scheduled a D&C. Then she saw what she thought was either fluid in my tube or maybe even an ectopic pregnancy. (I swear it looked like an embryo!) So we scheduled a laporoscopy with the D&C.

However, by the time I got home I started having excrutiating cramping. I called my doc and she told me to come back ASAP as she could do another u/s faster than an emergency room would get me seen and the hospital was next door to her office if needed.

Turns out what was in my tube had started leaking AND I was having internal bleeding but it hadn't yet ruptured. She transferred me to the OR and we did the laporoscopy within a cpl hours.

Now for the trippy part. Turns out the mystery stuff in my tube was a SECOND pregancy. She had only transferred one embryo. She said this second one was NOT from the IVF. She thinks she may have missed an egg during the retrieval and I had actually conceived a second embryo probably sometime between my er and my et (the only time in 2 months we attempted sex)!!! But the 2nd embryo couldn't travel thru my fallopian tubes bc of all my scar tissue and became ectopic. She thinks it was probably the ectopic one that caused the miscarriage of the transferred egg.

She did a ligation on my right tube and removed my left tube completely as well as did the D&C. I feel a huge sense of relief now. My instincts had me worried since around the time of the transfer and obviously for a reason.

It's also strange that I had had someone tell me awhile back about her sensing twins. And I just have this feeling like after we transferred one, another was saying "not without me!!".

So now I'm taking it easy and just feeling much more relaxed. Or maybe that's the Percocet. We're all still in shock about conceiving on my own. Makes me wonder if I had at some other time in the last 6 yrs too or how I had never had issues before.

Question: Originally my RE had scheduled the lap and d&c for next week. Does that seem strange to you considering she did see something in my tube during the first u/s? She told my DH that had we not done the surgery, had I not called back, I probably would've died. Was she taking an irresponsible risk by originally putting it off so long?

Oh Tara, This is an incredible story. I am so glad you are okay and that you called back when the pain hit. I am very sorry for your losses. You must have been stunned beyond belief to have also conceived between the er and the et. Take good care of yourself.
I'm not sure what to say about the RE's plan, maybe someone else will be able to comment.

Any time they do surgery they usually try to wait and see what is going to "happen" to avoid doing anything invasive that might not be necessary. Doesn't always make sense-but it is what happens all the time.

Take it easy and don't do too much! G/l!!

Wow Tara, what a roller coaster! I'm so glad to hear that you're ok and got the help you needed.

I'm wondering about the 2nd embryo - did your RE say anything about the possibility of it being an identical twin? Even though you only transferred 1 embryo, it's possible for them to split after transfer. Maybe that explains the 2nd one?

Take good care of yourself!

She didn't mention the possibility of it splitting, probably bc where the fluid was. Like maybe the sperm could get there but the egg wouldn't/shouldn't have been able to get back down thru the scar tissue in the tube.

I don't know though. We had used condoms the rare times we had sex and with my tubes the way they are, I just don't see how it would have been possible. I'm hoping she's going to do some testing to find out exactly what is was in there. I really don't feel like it was an ectopic. Hopefully I'll have more answers on Thursday when I go back for a post-op.
