Earth's Best peas and rice baby food

So Alethea eats babyfood.

She eats a lot of Earth's Best peas and brown rice. Is rice every cross contaminated with wheat? She seems to slowly be getting little flare ups and I'm starting to wonder if it isn't a build up of wheat in her system from this.

Also, my hands got bad recently but are getting better, and I think it was from some lotion I used. Then tonight some of her peas got on my hand and stung, and now there are red spots where the peas touched me. How weird is that?

THanks,
Tracy

That is weird. Is there citric acid or anything like that in the baby foods?

I think there is definitely a risk of x-con with rice.

Yes, x-con of wheat/gluten onto rice is not that uncommon. That's why there is GF rice available. We get Lunden's. Doesn't this SUCK?

of course, it could also be the peas (DS has a severe green pea intolerance).

I usually get Lunds rice as well. I was wondering though, if I buy rice from the bulk tank at the co-op, then rinse it really well should that be okay?

I don't think it is the peas because before she was eating the peas and rice she was just eating the plain peas and I didn't suspect it back then.

It is so hard to know because I never know if something would cause a very rapid breakout of eczema on her face, or if something would not show up very much until it built up in her system, making the figuring out of that very difficult. KWIM? Of COURSE you do. You've all been there, right?

So in prepared food like that though, cross contamination is a sure possibility? I'm going to steam peas and cook known-to-be-wheat/gluten-free-rice and put it in the blender then freeze in cubes for her so we will have something quick and convenient for her to eat. She doesn't seem to like chicken very much, and is pretty picky about the orange veggies. If I make my own I can sneak a little of that in. It isn't hard to make your own baby food, right?

Thanks,
Tracy

No, it's not hard at all. I make batches and freeze in those non-BPA/pthalate baby cubes. I use a base item like potato or most commonly lentils and then add some poultry and assorted veggies, garlic, spices, pepper, whatever and then use a mini quisinart to mix it up into a chunky puree - this is the only way I can get all this good stuff into her. You have to cook the various components separately but it's not too hard. I boil up some lentils then saute all the veggies and ground turkey or whatever then I mix it all up and taste and season until it is really yummy.

mmmm... maybe I should try that. We've just been doing finger foods that DD can bite and eat herself, but she never seems to get much down. I wonder if a puree would get a little more into her belly?

Yeah, we always put various finger foods on her tray which she gobbles down but this is the best way for at least one well-rounded meal to get into her. I should be way better at getting her used to the taste of individual veggies but I can only deal with so much at a time. We usually put the food on a spoon and she feeds herself. We do this with her mashed up yams too and anything else that will stay on a spoon. She definately loves to feed herself any which way. Her main finger foods are fruits, avocado, small bits of chicken, rice cake and the rest tend to get mashed up and put on a spoon for her.

Okay, so I had already checked their website which states that oats can be cross-contaminated with wheat, but doesn't say anything about their facility nor about rice.

So I just called the company, and they confirmed that the equipment they use to process their rice is also used to process their wheat.

The woman didn't seem to in the know though, initially telling me that if there was gluten in the product it would be on the lable.

But this is good news for me, because assuming it is true, then I've found the cause of these current eczema troubles. And the good news about them is that they are just on her shoulders primarily, and are hard and very very crusty like sandpaper. But they don't seem to be bothering her a lot, even though her face has seemed rashy off and on it hasn't cracked or weeped and she isn't scratching it, and now that we know we can stop the baby food and she will heal.

Pheeeww!
