wow surprised how anti-circ that was. Great! They talk about infant circumcision like its a horrible thing, finally. This kind of stuff should never happen to children. Adults do all kinds of weird, slightly mutilating things to their bodies, from getting a tattoo, to stuffing sacks of silicon into their chests, circumcision should be placed in that group, never, ever on children.

I remember watching that on tv this year and am so proud of my fellow West Aussie Liam Bartlett for doing a report on circumcision. This is the 2nd time 60 Minutes in Australia has done a report on circumcision. The first was by George Negus way back in 1984 (I think it was around then) and he too, was also opposed to the operation. I would love to know if anyone knows if this article has been posted on the internet, because I am positive that 60 Minute's article back then was partly responsible for the decline of routine circumcision in Australia.

I hope like some of you have said above, that the US version of 60 Minutes will show an article similar to the Aussie one. We can only hope!

I am not sure what you mean but the link was to a blog. Was there supposed to be an article attached to this?

Ha! Dream on. Australia is way a head of the US on this and I think that for the foreseeable future there won't be anything critical like that. It will always be "It's a family choice". Don't want to hurt the feeling of those parents.

Thanks for posting this video, I'll send it on to my email lists. I've got two trips planned to Australia in the next two years and am excited about getting that 10% rate down to 0%--the only acceptable rate for mutilation of babies.

I would really like to see the George Negus version! I wasn't aware of that, but it sounds really good.

I remember seeing this 60 Minutes one when it was on. I liked some parts of it, but in other ways I thought it wasn't very good. It's definitely better than most of what has been in the Australian media lately, quoting from only Russell or Morris and being very biased, implying that as a country we've become lazy about doing a necessary evil.

I watched the next week to see the mailbag on 60 Minutes and they said their responses showed people overwhelmingly thought circ was abuse! But, they had an online "chat" after the show which involved the channel asking pre-prepared questions to Brian Morris and him just quoting from his web site. It was horrible.

I've been a bit down in the dumps lately about circ in Australia though when I stumbled on an Australian parenting board full of people in favour of circ and even travelling far to get it done on toddlers, and criticising their doctors for not providing referrals or information. I really want to change the 10% to 0% too.

I also remember that 60 Minutes released a book sometime in the 1980s of some of their documentaries. I am sure it includes the George Negus special on circumcision called "The Unkindest Cut," as I remember reading it at a neighbour's house in 1985. While writing this I happened to google it and someone has a copy for sale:

This is about the closest I can find to the video footage George Negus presented. If anyone does happen to buy it for the $10, can they confirm that the Unkindest Cut was included in this book?
