Need remedial help using deutsche bahn

I am living in Schleswig-Holstein in a semi-rural area and do not have a car. Due to some serious issues with our children's school they are transferring to a freie schule in a small town about 15-20 minutes north of us by car. We are on a train line, but the new school is not and there is no direct morning bus. We are in the process of getting drivers licenses a car etc. but in the meantime I have to figure out another way to get them to school and back each day.

I searched the db website and found a bus combination that would work, but I have some questions... I don't use db that often, and I know that when I do use it I am often not using it to my advantage.

I don't feel comfortable with my children (6/9) riding the bus every day by themselves, at least not on the way there because there are transfers, so starting out I will ride with them everyday.

What is the best way to pay for this? A weekly or monthly season ticket? Do I need one for each of us? I find all the fare choices to be completely confusing!

Any and all advice on this is appreciated!

though the buses appear on the db website they probably aren't run by db but by a local "verbund" system. you might get the tickets (and also monthly passes?) though that. here is the website of the SH Nahverkehrsverbund. you choose your area and they show you the operators in your area. if you then klick on one that has bus lines you will find prices and where and when they run. if however you are sure that you can buy the bus and the train ticket together, you can ask at the db counter for monthly prices for that exact route you're taking. they may or may not be cheaper, so have them print you the different possibilities: individual, weekly, monthly.

I'm sorry this is so confusing, rural areas in Germany are hard to get around in without cars. you could tell me vaguely the area you're in and I can link you to the bus line operators, but of course I understand if you'd rather not tell.

No I don't mind. I am in Plön and the school is in Selent.

Hi Walosi,

most regions have special tickets for children. You need to fill out a form and get a stempel (what's the english word for that??) from the school to prove they are students.

which ticket to get for you depends on how much and how long you'll be using it.

i checked the link oceane posted, they have a price check "Preisberater"
plönt to selent costs 2,20 if you can take the direct line.

if you click "sh-Tarife" you can find this pdf http://news.eformation.de/v3/client/.../data/7932.pdf and compare the prices.

a one way ticket for a child plön to selent costs 1,35 (adult) 2,20
wochenkarte (one week, adult ) 16,80 for students it's 12,90
a monatskarte (a month, adult) 48,70 students: 37,40

you will each need your own ticket. hope i could help you a little.
