We get a long fine without one.
No you don't need one to get through life.
I can't answer for your situation but I don't plan to have one again.

That would be very unusual, then. When I got my first cell phone, I had no credit, and didn't even have to put down a deposit. I was even told by the sales agent I could get up to three lines without a deposit.

When I got my first apartment, I put down a deposit equal to 1 month's rent.

When I got my first car insurance, I paid in full up front - I was not denied. But then, I lived in a mandatory insurance state, so I'm not sure they COULD deny me.

No, you don't need one. I don't have one, I am sure my FICO is in the toilet from lack of credit and I get through life just fine. (I am in my late 30's)

Another one on team Ramsey here.

Just wondering, how long ago was that?

It was the opposite for me. I had no credit and they wouldn't let me open up a cell phone line. I had to get my dad to cosign on the account for me. That was probably 9 years ago. I think it was after that when I got my first CC.

For me, I wasn't allowed to get a cellphone without a cosigner. At 23, (4 years ago) I needed a loan for a car, which I would not have gotten (in spite of a 50,000/yr job) without my excellent credit score (from carrying a card and paying it off). At 27 (this year) I would not have gotten a loan at 5% interest to buy my home without my excellent credit score. All of my employers except one have run credit checks. My home insurance company gives me a discount because of my good credit score. Hotels won't let me stay there unless they have a credit card on file. My last two apartments ran a credit check, also - one of the landlords I know turned down other people because of low credit scores.

Could you live without one, sure. But I'd get one if you ever intend to buy a home on a mortgage (and not too many people can pay cash for a house). I'd also get one if you ever intend to stay in a hotel, buy a car on credit, get insurance, or get a monthly-payment cellphone. And if you choose not to, be aware that it may limit your employment and home rental options.
