Unvaxed child in Dubai; OPV

My friend (whose three year old is unvaccinated) recently moved to Dubai, and is concerned because they only use the OPV there. She's worried that her son will be exposed to polio because of it. I just reread the shedding article Deborah gave me; according to that, it's definitely a possibility. My friend doesn't know what to do... keep him away from all children there? That seems impractical. Order the IPV and have Eli vaxed with it? I wouldn't - I don't believe it has any efficacy -- but I also don't know what to say to allay her fears. We talked about keeping his immune system healthy, but she's afraid (because of other medical issues he has) that he might be immuno-compromised, and therefore at greater risk for contracting polio from a recently vaxed child.

Any thoughts? I feel badly... she's so worried. Thanks,

Remember the Amish/Polio story? An immunocompromised Amish baby (10mo) went to several English (non-Amish) hospitals for testing/treatment and one did a test of her fecal matter and found the polio virus. This immunocompromised baby was harmlessly carrying the polio virus and so were several of her neighbors.

I'll send you my polio info.

Can I just pack you up in my brain and take you everywhere? The info you sent was so amazing -- I'm really grateful.
