Really good NON- depressing book recs? - Page 2

Beginner's Greek by James Collins.

You must, must immediately get this from the library. It is so delectable, so witty, so wise, so full of love and romance and intelligence...and...words fail me, it's so good. Brief summary: man meets woman on an airplane. They fall in love and she gives him her number. He loses it. The years that follow.

Those are funny...unless you're in debt! Personally, they make me so anxious for her that I have to stay up all night reading until I get to the happy ending (however temporary)

Do watch the "usually" on the Chick Lit, that BookGoddess mentioned though; some of them are light and funny, yet also have the heroine overcoming a situation that can be fairly fraught. Marian Keyes -- whose great big lovely door-stopper books I love -- just had a book out called This Charming Man that -- while funny and definitely "Chick Lit" -- involved a very abusive relationship.

If we're edging into the realm of romance, I'd like to put a vote in for Susan Elizabeth Phillips, particularly her later stuff and First Lady.

Oh, and a second vote for No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency -- they leave me feeling soooo peaceful, and are slim little reads.

Finally, I can't believe I forgot about Christopher Buckley. He's a Washington insider who writes very clever books. He wrote Thank You For Not Smoking (book better than movie...of course!). I think one of my favourites of his is Florence of Arabia.

Elinor Lipman's books are good for escapism.

Laurie Colwin's books are all very happy, and beautifully written. I wish there were more of them!
