good job parenting!

sorry couldn't resist. I started out with the no empty praise thing when my first DS was little. I was frantic that I would impede his artistic sensibilities by emptily (is that a word?) praising his scribbles. To my horror, it backfired. He never drew at all and in fact would get mad when servers in restaurants would give him crayons.

As soon as I started dumping the empty-sounding (cause it's not really empty at all) praise upon him, he drew like a prodigy. Well, not really, but you get the point.

Since then, I've just decided to be myself.
