Questions about using wool

I am crocheting some wool nursing pads right now. I have used wool before, but not for anything that needs to be washed/worn (mostly play food). So my questions are:

What is the point of felting? What would it actually do for my nursing pads?

Do I have to lanolize them or use a special wool wash on them?

That's it. Thanks so much.

I would not felt them. They will be softer and more maneuverable if they're nt felted. Plus, if you felt them they will become thick and your already overfilled bra will become, well, even bigger ;-) I recommend just lanolizing them occasionally and washing them gently in castille soap or a drop of shampoo. You can also soak them in vinegar and/or conditioner t make them softer, you would d this before lanolizing. Personally, I have hemp sherpa pads that I really love and hold quite a bit of milk, I also know others who swear by wool though.

Thanks! So it is important to lanolize them? What happens if you don't, or if you wash them in regular (natural) detergent?
