Ok, I had this great idea to make a treasure map for my ds for christmas. I thought I'd use a piece of poly/wool felt & glue stuff on, trees, lines, ship, treasure, N,S E, W.

Has anyone every made one, glued together, sewn?
help

What a great idea! Please post a picture once it's done; I'd love to see it.

Yes, I have. It was a simple one on a brown paper sack that was cut open and burnt on the edges to give that old and "found" look. There were directions of finding treasure. My kids are really into pirates, so even though it was simple, they had a lot of fun. I think your idea sounds like a good one. Have fun!

Yeah, I have! I made it out of felt, and put a ribbon on the back so it could be rolled and tied up. I sewed the pieces on, and made the edges uneven.

Here is a photo, before I put the ribbon on the back. Oh, and I put a skull and cross bones on the flag of the ship, too.

Wow, that is great. Thanks for posting the pic & letting me know you sewed the pieces on. I was thinking glueing, but now i suppose I could sew & glue.
Gives me more ideas!

Glue + felt does not work, in my experience. The glue sort of soaks through the felt and gets hard and discolored. I don't know if that is true if you're using wool felt, though...I'm vegan and only use the non-wool varieties.

Oooh, thanks for mentioning that about the glue. :That would have really discouraged me if i started glueing & it ran through & crusted over, yuck. The only felt things I"ve made are a gnome with wool felt, sewn & poked w/ a felt needle in my sons Waldorf parent/child class. The teacher gave the materials & instructions so it turned out great LOL>

If you don't mind sharing, what are the dimensions of your map.

I've since given the map to my nephew, but the table that it is on is 20" by 14", if that gives you an idea...it is a little smaller than that.

Leenie, thank you!

ooo, I've never done a treasure map, but I do treasure hunts quite often, the kids love them, the sillier the better!

"when you have torn a piece of paper and dont know what to do..
You must put it back together with some good Elmers ______"

(then the next clue is with the elmers glue)

Thanks That helps a lot. I actually made it to the fabric store & bought the felt this past sunday. The middle aged man at the checkout said, oh what are you going to make with all that, tree skirts for christmas? I said no a treasure map for my son. The look on his face was so great, something inbetween ooh i never thought of that, wow great idea, & a bit of pride at something new you can do with felt. LOL
I love shopping for fabric/felt/ crafts. The people in the store always want to know what your making.
Thanks for the inspiration for the map Pariah. I can't wait to start working on it this week.

Felt is a good idea!!

I made one using a boring old, large, white piece of paper. I found a treasure map online for something to go by and drew on the paper with crayon. Soaked the paper in some coffee for an old look, let it dry and then crumpled it up. Last but not least I singed the edges. Extremely inexpensive (didn't spend a dime) and DS LOVED it!!

Oh, Melissa & Doug make this awsome real wood treasure chest. It's the coolest!!

I make them using playsilks dyed in tea, and then hand draw the map with a brown fabric marker. They look nice and old that way, and the silk won't get ripped.

Ok so I'm loving your idea. s it easy to dye it? Do you just dunk it in the tea for a few minutes?

I set a pot of water boiling and add a couple of tea bags. Lipton works very well. Then I boil it down for a while so it's concentrated and something I would never, ever want to drink. I leave the silk in it overnight, then rinse it well. Sometimes I''ll do it a second time, only crumpling the silk and putting about half of it in the tea, so that there are darker and lighter areas when it's finished.
