Would you mind sharing what rates you charge? Region and area of expertise/experience would be appreciated as well.

Thanks in advance!

Dh does. Usually middle school to high school level math. He majored in math in college and taught middle school math for about 5 years.

So far he has charged $50 an hour. He decided awhile back if he gets any new clients though he's going up to $60

I do upholstery work and I also teach. I charge 70.00 for 4 hours in my studio. I found that there are a lot of people who want to learn and I have a niche in teaching because nobody else does it! I have been doing the work for about 10 years and live in Ashland, Oregon.

$30-$40/hour

I tutor math and have for 6 years. I charge anywhere between $50 - $70 depending on if it is their house or mine and if it is in the afternoon or evening. I generally do not raise my rates on a family once I start with them. I live in the DC metro area.

As a middle school math teacher, I charged 50-60/hour for math tutoring.

As an Orton-Gillingham trained tutor, I charged 70/hour. Experienced O-G tutors can get more.

I'm in the Boston Suburbs.

DH has thought about it, we both have masters degrees in business, i run an inhome daycare so im around kids all day. Im thinking of getting my teaching certificate anyway. If either one of us were to tutor JR/Sr high level students 40/hr min and it would go up from there. We are able to tutor in math, english, history, economics, gov't etc.
We would also have a contract and require repayment for the week (just like i do for dayare)

You know, I've been toying with this idea for a while. I have a double degree in Anthropology & Business, but I can teach almost any subject, except for math--that I can only do to Algebra 1. Anything related to Geometry just never makes much sense to me, lol. I kick butt at finance & accounting though.

For those of you who tutor, how many hours do you do it per week (aka is this your main gig, or could it be)? And how do you find your 'students'?

Also, for those who are tutoring in subjects that they did not major in in college, how do you prove you know these subjects? I had a couple people ask me for credentials when I told them I can tutor them in English. Other than my A's in college level English classes, what else could I show??

Thanks!

I have tutored in the past and now my hubby tutors three kids a week during the school year and 5/week during the summer. It's fantastic money! He only charges $40 and was just saying he's not going up on his clients. We've talked about though if he takes any new ones on that he will charge $50.

Also, in the summer, most of his clients are 2x a week. That was the deal he made for not charging more...his clients gladly obliged.

It's wonderful extra money although you should never figure it into your budget because it's just sometimes too sporadic. People cancel some weeks or something comes up at school and my hubby has to cancel.

We usually use that money for our entertainment or something extra that came up and we have put a lot into our Christmas savings jar. Last summer we added most of it to our house budget and bought some things like a dresser, paint, etc.

When DH was in college, he did tutoring for other students -- he has a natural language gift and is fluent or close in multiple languages. He minored in French in college, but otherwise has no language "credentials". He speaks Spanish daily at work.

Do you think he would be able to get work as a middle or high school French or Spanish tutor without a teaching background? I'm confident that I could get the word out -- I've got a marketing/pr background and am sure that we could find prospects.

Since he does not have any certification or any official credentials, I'm assuming he would charge less than the going rates I see posted here? Still, even $25/hour is probably better than he'd get doing other part time work.

Just throwing ideas around... I appreciate your input and suggestions.

Around here I charge $10-15/hour. My friend, who is state certified in Math and English charges $15.00/hour

I specialize in test preparation-focusing on TEAS and PRAXIS. I also do general math and reading.

My friend does middle/high school math mostly with some other subjects thrown in as needed.

If he's fluent in other languages I would expect he would do fine tutoring in those.

Depending on the market where you are I would expect he could get well more than $25 and hour...

We're in the metrowest Boston area. My town's public school has a Spanish immersion program, and the closest charter school has a French immersion program -- I think there should be some likely prospects... although I suppose tutoring is an expense people some will be cutting out this year...

It is hugely regional.

My sister lives in a pricy area of NJ and easily charges $75/hr for tutoring in French or Spanish.

Dh has co-workers who tutor high school science and they only get $25/hr in rural upstate NY.
