can healthcare workers be forced to get a flu vaccine?

I work part time in a nursing home and heard a rumor today that starting next year employees would be forced to get a flu vaccine. Can they legally do this? What are my rights? I live in California if that matters.

The hospital I take my nurisng students to for clinical rotations is requiring all employees to have the flu vaccine, but they are also excepting waivers for staff who don't want the vaccine.

So far there haven't been any problems with waivers.

Joint commission requires that your employer offer all it's employees the flu vaccine. You are not required to take it. If you refuse a waiver must be signed proving that it was offered to you so that the facility cannot be fined.

Does anyone think I should cut them off at the pass and go to HR and have a brief letter placed in my file stating my religious objections to vaccines. Or should I just wait until they say the flu vaccine is mandatory and then tell them my position???

More than 90% of things in life that we worry about never come to be. So I have this rule in my life, I cross each bridge as it comes.

Don't borrow trouble.

As a paramedic, our employer requests that we all have the flu vaccine, but they don't object when someone refuses. I've never had one.

Just wait. Now that the flu vax is a Joint Commission requirement you'll probably have to sign a waiver every year for records. The JC doesn't want to see one piece of documentation refusing the flu vax for multiple years they are going to want one waiver for every year you refuse, proof that it was offered to you every year.

Thanks everyone, great info! I am just going to sit tight and wait. I'll refuse on religious grounds when the time comes.
