Making a comfy house with no budget

I posted last week about ideas for keeping warm this winter, and got inspired by everyone. : Part of my problem was that I was in a funk about my house, feeling like it wasn't nice enough, or pretty enough, or whatever. So . . . in the last few days, I have:

-- Put up curtains ($5) in bedroom (what a difference!)
-- Brought up our old bedroom furniture, which helped us get organized and makes the room look MUCH better
-- Repurposed an old TV stand as a nightstand, adding space for my sweaters and sweatshirts
-- Brought up an old rug for the living room. After a good vacuum, it looks nice and helps a bit with the cold floor
-- Found all the warm PJ's I had stored in the basement!
-- Used an old bookcase for a desk, which allowed us to move the computer out of our bedroom!
-- Cleaned out all the paperwork, which allowed me to file for a couple of medical expense reimbursements totaling around $150

We've done a few other frugal activities this weekend, and I'm feeling really good about it!

I was just thinking about this very thing. I've been doing a fair amount myself of bringing out the winter bed linens, getting out the woolens and warm coats, matching up mittens and organizing my mudroom. I hung a few pictures this weekend, and baked bread. It all feels pretty cozy as well and makes the house feel like a nice place to be.

When I'm tempted to turn on the gas-sucking fireplace to get warmed up, I grab a blanket - I've found that minky-like synthetics (and wool, but not as comfy for me) work well and I just buy a bunch of the fabric at the fabric store -- you don't even have to hem the edges if you don't want. Cozy "throws" on the cheap, and they come in pretty colors and patterns.

Candles - they warm things up, and look cozy, too!
