Great idea. My DD's teacher last year in kindergarten kept a treasure bucket. The kids got a prize out of the treasure bucket at the end of each week. No candy.

DH is a public school teacher and the school board enacted a corporation wide policy that food is not to be used as a reward of any kind, and teachers are not allowed to distribute food of any kind. Has to do with allergies and too much sugar. If you really want change, go to the school board, not the principal.
