Animal Vaccinations? - Page 2

On the fibrosarc thing - what we know for sure is that some cats are predisposed to forming the tumors at injections sites. As in, injections for anything, not just the vaccines. We started carrying the newer cat rabies vaccine, but it's only good for one year. So do we give a one year vaccine (no adjuvant but more pokes) or the regular rabies vaccine (adjuvant but good for 3 years, so less pokes).

I don't vaccinate my own indoor cats for rabies because it's not required by law where I live. BUT, you have to be very aware of the risks where you live. If I lived in the outer parts of our city, I would probably do it. In the past couple of years, we've had 2 cats, just in our clinic, exposed to rabies. In both cases the cats were indoors only and without vaccines. Nobody counted on rabid bats getting INTO the house, but that's what happened. The cats are required to have a 6 month quarantine in isolation in our clinic. Not nice, and the cost is astronomical.

It was pet vaxes that got me questioning vaxes in general. Our cat had been very ill and when he finally got over the illness the vet recommended no more immunizations ever. The vet said that we just don't know about the cats immune system and if he was permanently immuno-compromised. He was an indoor cat though. But it really made me start to wonder. Now we don't vax our kids or pet.

Rabies is a serious enough disease that I am comfortable vaccinating my dog for it, and it would be especially devastating to have him destroyed simply because I couldn't provide adequate vax records. What a terrible thought.

I didn't realize that NY state law only requires it every three years, though. Very good to know.

I didn't vaccinate my first dog, and he died from parvo which is a disease they vaccinate against. I did vaccinate my second dog based on my experiences. My kids are vaccinated as well, though I do a selective/delayed schedule (DD1 is all caught up, DD2 is nowhere near caught up).
