Tender lump in breast next to nipple

Just in the past 24 hours I've developed a small (between pea and marble sized) tender lump right next to my nipple. It is a definite lump and under the skin almost looks a bit purple-ish. Obviously I'm rather freaked out about it. Anyone know what this is, please? I'm 99% breastfeeding my almost 8 mo baby. I'm worried that since this arose so quickly it'll be very bad very soon if it's some sort of infection or something. It's on the areola, right next to my nipple.

I breastfed my dd for 19 mos and made it to almost 8 mos w/ds with no mastitis or plugged ducts or infections . . . so I'm kind of freaked out right now. Thanks for any help with what this might be.

sounds like a plugged duct. keep nursing on that side and massage the area.

Thank you!

Yes, sounds like a plugged duct to me too. I use 1) heat (hot showers and hot compresses) 2) massage and 3) lots of nursing in different positions while applying heat and/or massage.
It should come out fairly soon, but the area is likely to be tender for a good few days afterwards. Hope it's gone by now!

Yes, it went away in fact just later the same day - maybe 12 hours or so. Totally freaked me out for awhile there, but all better now. Thanks for the replies.
