I live in the city (Edmonton Alberta) and we have a bylaw against keeping poultry for any reason in back yards. I wrote to our city commissioner to ask about the possibility of keeping a few laying hens, and received this response:
"The intent of this particular Bylaw section was specifically to prevent the keeping of poultry in back yards. Notwithstanding, your proposal shows that you would be keeping a low profile and show consideration for neighbours. Our view is that an amendment to the bylaw would be required to open up the permanent keeping of laying hens in residential areas. The City was not contemplating advancing and changes to the bylaw at this time. Should you wish, however, to champion changes in the bylaw, my office would arrange for you to meet with appropriate persons in administration, to discuss what the process might be"
I was pleasantly surprised, and am now wondering if anyone has ANY experience with this type of thing? I have never in my life dealt with anything remotely like this and am looking for a few pointers
