My water broke...no contractions yet - UPDATE!!! Meadow is here!!

My water broke around 3 am. I was pretty excited, but didn't have any contractions. It's now 3 pm and I still am not having contractions, aside from the occasional braxton-hicks. My midwives advised me to take acupuncture, black and blue cohosh, and castor oil. I am getting ready to take the castor oil, and just went walking for an hour. The hard part is that they are not allowed to provide care after my water has been broken for 24 hours. I am looking at a hospital transfer and I'm so sad. Please, if anyone has any more advice or support, I could really use it.

I'll keep you udpated.

maybe you just peed yourself at 3am, and your water will spontaneously break in a few hours. i'd personally wait on castor oil. Read up some or ask around. keep up your fluids and watch your temp.

Any way to convince your midwife you may have been wrong about your water breaking, so they can continue to care for you?

My biggest regret is letting my HB doctor know that my water broke first with DS1. Like you, labor didn't start on it's own, pitocin got it started at the hospital but the hospital wanted delivery in 24 hours! That didn't happen. I had a C/S.

Water broke first with DS2 (and I mean a LOT of water and it kept leaking for hours) but I had a second water bag. It broke more than 20 hours later (we didn't know about it before then.)

Also the amniotic fluid keeps replacing itself. As long as you and baby are doing fine, it could be days before you would actually deliver. My SIL had her water break three days before she went into labor. When she did go into strong labor, she delivered in a couple of hours. (Homebirth.)

This is all info I wish I knew when it was happening to me.

I hope labor and delivery come soon! Congratulations!

congrats on being so close to meeting your LO! :

i really encourage you to look maybe over in the UC forum and elsewhere for info on having ruptured membranes. my water broke with my twins and i also did not go into labor on my own. i was planning a hospital birth with cnm. after 24 hrs they (hospital policy) wanted to admit me. i ended up going in every 8 hrs for IV abx for about a day after my 24 hrs was up before i went in for my induction (which ended in a section). anyway, i urge you to do what you can to protect yourself and your baby. i know this is not the ideal time to go looking at research and being a strong advocate, but you won't regret any of it. i wish i had more to offer, but i did not do that research, though i wish i had.

good luck. hopefully you are in labor right now and all is going well. positive thoughts coming your way!!

Hows things? Hope the contractions come soon.. I agree with trying to convince your MW that you were wrong about your water breaking as long as their aren't any concerns about you or the baby.

Good luck!

Oh man, you are doing exactly what I did. Did they offer you the Foley catheter/bulb thing and cervidil? It worked for me and I don't regret it for a second.

I hope things have gotten started for you by now!

Thanks for the advice and the great vibes everyone! I really appreciate it. We ended up at the hospital after 19 hours of ruptured membranes and 6 hours of contractions. I was only 1 cm dilated and the baby's heartrate was climbing, so the midwife advised transfer. Meadow Sofia was born 6 hours later, naturally, so it all ended well, if a little disapointing. I think it was good that we were there in the end, because the cord snapped and the placenta was disintegrating - a really strange sequence of events.

I am still processing everything, but we are home and doing great. She is a great nurser, and we have lots of loving care from friends and family. She was born with 2 club feet, so we are having consultations with orthopedic specialists tomorrow. She is absolutely precious, and I will post the birth story and pictures soon.

Congratulations to all the other mamas with new babies!:

Meadow Sofia
10/30/08 (due 11/10)
5lb 9oz, 18 inches
more precious than I ever imagined
