My husband's turning our current playroom into an office and we're going to turn the central 14X13 room into a playroom. I'm pretty into the idea of having a rainbow house. We did this before in a mobile home and it was weird but made me feel happy. So we have a blue bedroom and green bathroom and yellow living room and the kitchen will be orange and the office will be purple. So that leaves red. Is it strange to have a red playroom? Will the children be wound up all the time? My son has a red tent in his room so it will go with that but pretty much everything else he owns is green, including the swing set we plan on bringing in. Will that look Christmassy? Also, the first and only time he said 'geen' for green was when he selected an 'appletini' paint chip from the store. So....green or red?

ETA- my son is 18 months and his friends range from 8 months to 3 years

I think making the whole room red would be too much. Nor would I allow an 18mo to select a paint color.

Maybe do white with red trim, or paint a rainbow on the walls? Or do each wall a different color?

Oh, I think red is lovely. There's lots of different colors of red. My mother had a gorgeous Chinese Red entry way in one house. It really set the tone for the house. Despite what you would think about red, it was very sedate and calm.

We had a red library and loved it. Fill at least one wall with shelves, large art, or something else neutrally colored, and the red will soften well.

As pp said, there are lots of shades of red. We went with a brick/brown red. Called "ceder chest," I think.

Voted something else. I'm not a fan of bright colors in closed off rooms. But that's me and I'm boring.

I like green. That being said my new playroom will be a shockingly bright yellow as it is already painted that way and I like it well enough as it to not change it.

I had a red living room and dining room at the old house and after a year, it was just too much. Plus, it will shrink the room a TON. I'd go with an actual rainbow swirled around the walls with white background or large colorful polka dots on a white background. FUN.

I voted red. My DD's bedroom is a lovely deep shade of raspberry. It's very warm and inviting, I think. No problems with being wound up or anything that I can tell! I love bright and strong colors! We have an orange kitchen and a midnight blue dining room too!

Red for the entire room would be too much, in my opinion. I like the idea of having white walls, and then painting large rainbows, flowers, etc. on them.

I think red is fine for a playroom.

Maybe you could paint one wall red and the others neutral or do red on the top or bottom of the walls and a neutral, like khaki, on the other part.

You could choose a deeper red instead of bright fire engine red.

You could do red on 3 walls and then do a multicolor wall like this or with red, green, brown and tan squares like this rug.

Red is great for a playroom! I painted our basement family room red too, and it works great with white accessories, and a multicolor floor mat

I vote red : I agree that it depends on the shade of red though - a red that's too bright could be overwhelming. I also liked someone's idea of red and khaki together or red with white trim.

Pink. It's a lot easier on the emotions than red.
