Does anyone have a link on the vaccination regulations for Alberta Preschool and Playschools? I'm sure I could google it and come up with something but I'm feeling very lazy tonight...I'm saving all my energy to clean up the pumpkin guts mess the kids are making in the kitchen!

Immunization is not mandatory in Canada. I found this:

The right to not vaccinate is protected by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. When my kids went to preschool/kindy I just put a line through the immunization record and wrote "do not immunize". End of story. No problems at all.

After looking at those links and doing some research of my own I would think that there would be no reason to ask on a playschool registration form about vaccination at all.

I oversee a playschool program and when our licensing officer visited she said that we needed to add a vaccination portion to our registration form. Could you see why we would have to have this information if there are no regulations governing vaccination in Alberta? As someone who doesn't vaccinate it makes me think that information like this would be used to exclude unvaccinated children when they are sick because "what IF???" (its polio, its whooping cough, its the black plague...). KWIM? I just think with the biases that are out there, and lacking formal regulations why even ask?

My DD is completely unvaxed and currently attends a licensed co-op preschool in Alberta. There was a question on the form "is your child up to date on immunizations?" and I just checked off no.

I think it's just one of those bureaucratic annoyances...I think if Big Brother really wanted to get at us, it's more likely through the databases maintained by the local health nurses than by the forms the preschool keeps on file. The local nurses can see that I've never brought my kids in for vaxes.

And as for excluding the unvaxed kids when sick, I think it's more at the teacher's discretion. Ours is pretty laid back...sniffles OK, but no fevers and coughs etc. And our teacher says sick kids stay home, vaxed or not...as for whether or not she'd keep my healthy DD home if there was an outbreak of WC or something, I don't know, but that's always a possibility with any school.

Saskatchewan has the same vaccine regulations as Alberta(none). When my younger 2 were in a private playschool they never asked about vaccines. When my oldest was in a different private playschool I think they may have asked for a copy. This playschool was partially funded by the saskatchewan gov't, the playschool the other 2 went to wasn't. Kids were not excluded for not being up to date & the playschool was over 25 years old so it was most likely just the original rules that were never challenged or removed.

I am about to open a dayhome. On the application form for my agency they asked if my babe was up to date with immunizations. I just checked yes, because she has had the zero vaccines we have planned to give her to date.

They asked to see the vaccine records for my dogs, but just asked the question about my kid.

[OT: I can't believe how many Albertans there are on MDC! Who knew we had so many crunchy mamas in this province?]

Wild isn't it? For such a conservative province, we have a surprisingly strong crunchy community. As far as I know, we're the only province that has a freebirthing group. There's also babywearing & ec groups & a huge homeschooling community.

Where is the Freebirthing group? How exciting!

Anyone near Lethbridge? I run an AP playgroup and we are always looking for more like minded families

Pretty cool, eh?

So with regards to all the other stuff I think I will call our licensing officer and ask why we even need to ask about vaccinations if its not even regulated...really none of our business I think.
