Can you recommend some books?

Can anyone recommend their fave book set in the UK, in the not-too-distant-past (mid-late 20th century)? I'd like to put a few on my "To Read" list for the next few months, after I read Angela's Ashes...Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Englad, they're all fascinating to me right now.

Also, I'm almost done reading "I Know This Much is True" by Wally Lamb and am loving it. Any recommendations for similar books (and I've read his other one too, She's Come Undone, and it's one of my favourites).

Thanks!

I just finished The Tavern on Maple Street by Sharon Owens. It is set in Ireland, in today's time, but has a very comfy and nostalgic feel to it, and is a great story! She has a couple of other books that I am now dying to read...I highly reccomend it

I'm in love love love with Diana Gabaldon's Outlander Series. They take place in the 1940's & 50's and then jump back to the 1700's in Scotland.
Happy reading!

You might try Martin Amis, although I will warn you he's not too everyone's taste! You might try The Information.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Mark Haddon

White Teeth, Zadie Smith

anything by Penelope Lively

A.S. Byatt -- Possession or her four-book cycle about Francesca Potter, which starts in the '50s and ends in the '70s. First book is Virgin in the Garden, the last is A Whistling Woman

Anything by Margaret Drabble or Iris Murdoch

Saturday, Ian McEwan

For Ireland, the Country Girls trilogy by Edna O'Brien

If you like cozy books, anything by Maeve Binchy -- Circle of Friends, etc.

Kate Atkinson -- Case Histories, or Behind the Scenes at the Museum
